so I plug in my garmin, basecamp pops up. It detects both the garmin and the external 2gb micro sd card inside the garmin. I try to load the topo 24k west map onto the 2gb sd card (because the garmin cant handle such a big map) and it says it cant handle the amount of info I'm putting on the card. I dont think its actually going on the card, I think its still going on the garmin due to the small size.. it can handle barely 50 mb, thats not 2gb right!? any help..

If you selected the Removable Disk icon in BaseCamp it should be installing the maps to the card and not the unit's internal storage.

You can double check by looking in the lower right of the map selection screen in MapInstall where it shows the available free space on the selected device. Alternatively you can launch MapInstall directly and choose the removable device that you'd like to store the maps on. A shortcut should have been added to your Start Menu at the same time that you installed BaseCamp.

The 24k map products are quite large (2.6 GB - 4 GB) so your best bet would be to install just a subset of the map data that you are interested in.
