How to change base map in Basecamp to routable OSM street map?

I have a ton of Garmin equipment.

I standardized on it in 1996.

I got a new laptop.

I downloaded a new copy of Base Camp.

The base map doesn't have enough detail for me to route with it.

I want to install an OSM auto map that is routable so that I can route back into the forest, as well as for better trip planning and highway use.

I have down loaded numerous copies of compressed OSM maps to my hard drive from various sources.

I have un zipped the to the cloud, the hard drive, and to usb cards, and after I extract the files, I cannot get Base Camp to recognize them.

I have watched many videos of happy travelers downloading an OSM route map, and quickly installing it via basecamp.

Any one want to take a stab at this?

The most straight forward method I saw was accessing a file stored in the Garmin\Maps\ folder, and accessing it via "maps"->"Install map products"-> (list of maps in the maps folder.)

I've tried getting the files from various sources, and one seems no better than another.

I may be missing something simple, but I'm at my wits end.  Easily having spent 40 hours trying to install 1 routable map into BC.

Help!

  • It sounds like BaseCamp isn’t recognizing the .img files directly, you’ll need to install the map with Garmin MapInstall or convert it using MapSetToolKit so BaseCamp can read it properly. Try downloading the OSM “Windows installer” version instead of the raw .img file for an easier setup.

  • MapInstall is a program that installs maps to your device, not BaseCamp, so this is incorrect advice. The OP has already been advised to find an OSM map that suits his needs and has a Windows installer.
