BaseCamp is more stable than MapSource in Win7. It still crashes, but only about 1/3 as often as MapSource.

This no longer is true. MapSource 6.16.0.2 Beta is much more stable than BaseCamp in Win7. 6.16.0.2 hasn't crashed on me yet.

That's great news to hear. The MapSource beta contains a number of updates we put in specifically for Win7 stability. All of those changes will be rolled into a future BaseCamp revision.

Fairly new to Mapsource and BaseCamp software, but both current versions were crashing like crazy for me. Then I saw the posting for the Mapsource beta and downloaded and installed it today, but it's still crashing. Very frustrating. I know this is not much help but I hope that Garmin is looking at the log reports that get sent back to them when the program crashes. The instability of this software on Windows 7 (haven't used it on anything else) is really unacceptable. Every other program I own runs perfectly and better on Windows 7 with this notable exception.

Your system looks a lot like my system.

( Dell XPS 9000 with 8 GB RAM and Win7 Pro, NVidia GT220 display.)

I'm not wild about the way MapSource renders, but 16.6.0.2.Beta has never crashed on me.

The new version of BaseCamp lets you view the pre-installed topo map from the Oregon 400t on your computer. This is a very nice upgrade which addresses a long-standing complaint about the Oregon's with pre-installed maps.

When you select it, you get a message saying that map performance may be affected since it is being accessed on a connected device, but it seems to work fine in both 2d and 3d views. Very nice!

However, after applying the firmware update to my Oregon 400t, it will no longer display street names on any of the installed maps, including the pre-installed US Topo. All of the map settings are correct, but still no names. Others are reporting the same problem.

We'll be taking a look at the street name issue soon. Just so we're testing with a similar setup what is the firmware version you're seeing and what is the basemap (name and version as reported by BC) that is on your 400t?
  • I'm having the same problem with a nearly new Oregon 550, software version 3.30, GPS software version 3.70, BC ver 3.01, and TOPO U.S. 24K West. At a couple of zoom levels, major road names were showing, but all street names go away at most zoom levels. I sure hope this gets resolved, as routes following roads are not going to be much good, otherwise.

    Software Version 3.70
    GPS Software Version 4.34

The map is just called TOPO U.S. 2008. Should there be other version info somewhere?

If you click on the map inside of BaseCamp under Devices the Map Properties dialog should appear with the name and a version. For example the Oregon 300 I have handy shows up as "WW Autoroute DEM Basemap NR v2.00".

I don't know if we even have versions for the Topo US 2008, but just wanted to be sure.

There isn't much I can do to check this out over the weekend so expect a post from me again on Monday.
