deleting unlisted data

I believe that I have messed up. I deleted all the data in the "unlisted data" folder. The popup warned that the data would be deleted from all lists. I clicked OK. Now, I see that the tracks that were in the unlisted data folder are now gone from the lists that I had saved them in. I assume that there is no way to get them back, correct?

In the future, how do I empty the unlisted data folder without affecting any other lists or list folders? If I choose "cut", rather than "delete", BC returns the same warning.

Thank you

  • Unless there is a recent backup they are probably lost.

The Unlisted folder should only contain items that are not a part of any list. In effect, it is a subset of My Collection. Therefore, items can only be deleted (the same as in My Collection) - Removal/Cutting is not an option.

The References tab for an item's properties should  contain all locations of the item if it is in one or more lists and will be empty if it is in the Unlisted Folder.  If an item in Unlisted is placed in a list it should be immediately removed from Unlisted.

  • Any data in the unlisted data folder won't be in any other list so will only be gone from lists you saved them in if you had previously removed them from those lists.

  • Thank you both. Something has glitched, it seems. I have tracks that are in the unlisted data folder and a list that I created in a list folder. I made the mistake of deleting them from the unlisted data folder and they are gone from the list that I created.

I've been following a set process for several years now and this is the first time this has happened. It's not life-changing, but it is a bummer.

Here is my process, just in case I am doing something that is bound to make this happen.

I have saved tracks that I have created in BC in a list for each track, which is under a list folder called BC tracks. I have also created a list folder for the current year - say 2025. I copy the track and way points to my Montana 600 when I am going to paddle them. The Montana then has a route and its waypoints. When paddling, the Montana is recording the actual track. When home, I copy that track from the Montana to a list that I have created for the location - say Charleston Lake in the 2025 list folder  Then, I delete everything from the Montana until next time. The name of the track from the Montana is just date and time. I don't change that. So, now, what I see in BC is a time stamped track in the Charleston Lake list which is in the 2025 list folder.

This time, what it appears happened is that the same name and date stamped file appeared in unlisted data. I deleted it from there, but did not look to see that it was gone from its proper list. I did back up as I do after each session, but by then, of course, it was too late. I only found out later that the track was gone from both places.

I just opened the unlisted data folder. In it are a couple of dozen waypoints and 6 tracks that are also in their proper lists and list folders. From your replies, I now know that if I delete them from the unlisted data folder, they will be deleted from their proper lists and list folders, too.

Setting aside why or how this happened, is there a work around? If I were to change the name of the tracks - the ones in their proper folders, when I delete them from the unlisted data folder, would the renamed-tracks stay in their proper folders?

    Thank you.

I don't know.  The following is just my view of how BaseCamp works.

The Unlisted Data folder should contain a list, but it belongs to the application and not the user.  A user cannot delete this list or add lists to the Unlisted Data folder.

If the Unlisted Data folder contains a list it should behave like user lists.  This would mean that the list does not contain objects like tracks/routes/waypoints, but a pointer to the object in My Collection (an analogy would be Shortcuts in Windows).  So a name change should change the name in My Collection and this should be reflected in all lists.

My view is that BaseCamp requires all objects in My Collection to be in one or more user lists OR in the Unlisted Data list BUT not both.  Objects in the Unlisted Data folder can be sent to a user list (which will remove it from the Unlisted Data folder) or be deleted (which translates to delete the object in My Collection).

I would try copying from the Montana directly into My Collection.  The objects should appear in the Unlisted Data folder.  Then send the objecst to your desired user lists.  It should appear in the user lists and no longer appear in the Unlisted Data folder.

Out of curiosity, I would open one of the tracks in both a user list and Unlisted Data folder and check the References.

A reinstall of BaseCamp might fix your issue.  If your device has a fit folder, that may be the cause.  Removing fit files from the device via Windows before opening BaseCamp might be a solution if that is the issue.

edit:  For current files in both user list and Unlisted Data folder export the Unlisted Data folder as a gpx then delete the objects in the Unlisted data folder (check that they are gone in user lists/My Collection).  Then import the gpx file to a temp list and send the objects to the desired list(s) followed by removing the temp list and checking the Unlisted Data folder.

  • My apologies for not following up. Since the tracks in question were done while I was on vacation, I had a "backup" on the laptop that I used there. I was able to copy the individual track files to a USB stick, then copy them from there onto the home computer.

Thank you to you both for your help. The thread can be closed.
