Displaying 3D terrain message

When I open Base Camp 2.0.8, I receive this Update Required message. "In order to display 3D terrain a newer video card driver is required"
My ATI Radeon x300 SE 128MB HyperMemory card has the latest driver that ATI offers.
My computer is a Dell XPS400, OS XP Media Edition.
All other 3D software I have run fine.

That definitely isn't correct that the 3d view is still disabled after switching back to a DEM map. I've tested version 2.0.9 switching among the Global Application Basemap, City Navigator 2010, Topo 24k Southwest and Topo US 100k and everything appears to be working correctly.

What map products are you seeing these results with?

I'll do some further investigation on the 3d issue and send you a PM when I have more information.

    3D View Disabled

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for my question - I'm fairly new to the whole idea.

I downloaded Basecamp yesterday and installed it. I got a message with regards to my 3D drivers; I'm sorry to say that I didn't make note of precisely which message it was.

Today I went to the ATI website and downloaded all the latest drivers and software for my ATI video card (RADEON Express 200m). Restarted computer to complete installation.

Started Basecamp, and the 3D view is greyed out. I thought perhaps if I uninstalled/reinstalled Basecamp I would at least see the message again. Uninstalled Basecamp, then reinstalled it. No message, and the 3D view is still greyed out.

I have the following maps installed: City Navigator North America NT 2010.4, Global Application Basemap v2, and a New York Topo map that I downloaded somewhere.

Any idea what the problem/solution may be, or any suggestions as to what to try next? I'm not a computer genius, so please keep that in mind with your response! ;)

Thank you so much, in advance, for any help you might provide!

None of your maps contain the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data which is required for BaseCamp to display the 3D view. You may want to purchase a Garmin Topo map product which does include DEM data.

    DEM Information

Thank you for your quick reply!!

I just purchased the Garmin Nuvi 500. When I first ran the WebUpdater (and a bunch of other stuff that it told me to do) it let me update the map to the new 2010 one that I mentioned in my first post.

The Nuvi also came with Topo maps, and at the time I tried to update those as well - it gave me the option to do so, but it got hung up A BUNCH of times during the update process. (It took me literally 6-8 hours straight to get this stuff working properly.)

I believe, however, that I also downloaded the Topo update as well.

I am able to see it on the Nuvi, however, it does not show up in my MapSource program.

    A) Does the Topo map that came with the Nuvi (or the updated one that I THINK I downloaded) include DEM information?

    B) If it does, how do I get it from the Nuvi into MapSource (or anywhere on my computer for that matter) so I can access it in BaseCamp?

Thanks again for your help - sorry to be dense, but I really have spent quite a bit of time online trying to find the answers to these questions.

    :)

    A) Yes
    B) Currently, our desktop applications (BaseCamp, Mapsource, etc.) cannot access or display the maps that are in our GPS devices.

    Spoke with Garmin Support...

...and now I'm clear on the issue.

Apparently the Topo maps that come pre-installed don't have nearly the clarity that would be useful in a hiking situation. Support advised that I'd need to buy the 24K maps to see local topographical information.

Kinda lame, IMO, I guess "Packed with detailed street and topographic maps, nüvi 500 is ready for adventure both on and off the beaten path" must mean different things to different people.

Fortunately I did find those free Topo maps that load local detail, but must not have the DEM information you referred to. Still a lot more useful than what came with the unit. I had to scroll over to the west coast with the support guy to really get any idea what the Topo map looked like. My area is all one color for miles in any direction. LOL!

Thanks again, Basemap looks like a pretty neat program; hope to someday have a map that will take full advantage of all it's features!

    :)

    Reviving an old thread ...

I just installed BC 3.2.2 on an older laptop and get the "BC can only display 2D map ... video card driver is outdated. ... update your video card driver. ..." every time I start BC. BC appears to be working OK after the message is acknowledged.

The laptop is a Gateway MT3707 with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Series video card. The driver is v 8.341.0.0 (1/25/2007) and is the latest driver available from Gateway. ATI indicates Catalyst 10.2 is latest and it has the same driver.

The startup message is annoying and I'd like to eliminate it. If a later driver version is not available is there a way to just permanently disable 3D?

I believe the warning you are getting is different from this thread. It does not have a "don't show me again" checkbox, correct?

Unfortunately it is not possible to suspend that warning in BC 3.2.2. We'll try to improve it in a future release of BC. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the response. You're correct, my message is different from the other thread. Mine specifically says the video driver is outdated and instructs me to update it. There is no checkbox. A fix in a future release would be appreciated.

Sorry to necro post but am having same issues/error message as above (Basecamp version 4.2.5).

    1) Go to View --- Map View and the 3D option is shaded / can't be selected.
    a) Is that telling me the 100K map available with Basecamp isn't suitable for 3D use?
    b) If so, can I use the 24K SD Topo map SD card I bought for my Garmin GPS with Basecamp
    2) Same video card driver as state above - checked for updates and none available.
