Very low download speed in Basecamp

I'm trying to download BirdsEye imagery for my new GPSMAP 67i and apart of the "painfully tedious and slow" process of selecting 300mb chunks of imagery (why can't we just select a large area and the app splits automatically into chunk size it wants / chooses???), the download speed is EXTREMELY slow for they day and age we live in. Basecamp downloads imagery with the whopping speeds of ~100kb/s.

I've tried my regular home fiber connection (1gbps, everything else works fine and fast), and my phone's mobile Hotspot with two of the mobile operators I use (speeds are around 150mbps).

Does anyone have any solution? I had to keep my PC on all day and still haven't managed to download all the sat imagery I need for my next trip

  • Despite a very good connection with no packet loss, very good ping, I'm also getting errors like pictured above where "images fail to download" and the software skips to the next one.

Also - I need to add that downloads in Garmin Express are EXTREMELY fast compared to Base Camp. When I download new maps on my Fenix 8 watch before I travel to a certain area - often upwards of 5-7 GB in size, the download process is very fast and seamless, usually a few minutes. I don't understand why such a thing is happening in Base Camp.

  • Download speeds can be limited at the source, which makes the capability on your end irrelevant.  Garmin has discontinued BirdsEye, so it is doubtful the speeds will change.

They have replaced it with a subscription product called Outdoor Maps+ which provides access to satellite imagery, topo maps and other maps.  It is only available on some newer devices and I suspect areas of coverage vary.

I believe they have a free trial.  I think a single subscription is good for all compatible devices under one account.  Download must be done via Wi-Fi and the maps/satellite  imagery can't be downloaded to BaseCamp.  However, some things will be visible in BaseCamp when a device is connected.

I have no experience with Outdoor Maps+, so I can't say if the Satellite Imagery is viewable in BaseCamp.
