How to get BC's Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd to show decimal degrees (DD) and not show DMM eg. Nddd.ddddd Wddd.ddddd?

Garmin BaseCamp v475 shows Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd for position in the GUI - Preferences - Measurement - Postion - Grid.

When copy-pasting to OnX or Google Maps the preference is to use ddd.ddddd format with +ve or -ve instead of N, S, E, W letters.

How to get BC GUI to show DD format with no compass points or degree symbols (keyboard entry?), just plain text.

DD BaseCamp = N40.77745° W111.88819°

Standard DD = 40.77745, -111.88819

This is the standard DD format used by most modern mapping systems (Google Maps, GIS, etc.).

  • Should be an option in position format under Edit, Options, Measurement, Position

    It gives numerous options

  • Yes there should be with the 44 available options but none of them are in Standard DD format.

They are mostly either country formats or a few other non-country formats.

The amount of people that use "India Zone IIIB" have to be a miniscule population relative to a universally used Standard DD format.  Very odd.

Garmin stores the Standard DD format in the gpx files but then does not show it in the GUI where you would typically copy-paste to OnX or GM or save to text file.

  • I would try using the  sdd mm.mmm format.  To be honest, a well written application should accept most common formats.  Just try a copy and paste and see what happens.

  • Garmin BaseCamp supports Standard Decimal Degree ([+/-]ddd.ddddd) with a sign but only on entry, once the data in the application it's not available anymore as BC only supports a hemispherical DD coord. fully.

For Lat/Lon, hemispherical coords. are fully supported ([NSEW]ddd.dddd^deg) the signed Lat/Lon is not.  Its a one way conversion - on entry only.

GPX files contain the SDD with sign but that data format isn't accessible through the GUI anywhere, very odd.

Their reference doesn't note this. "Supported" is... well... not quite true.

Position Formats "Supported" by BaseCamp Software

    Lat/Lon (Latitude and Longitude)
    h/s = hemisphere/sign (N/+,S/-,E/+,W/-), d = degrees, m = minutes, s = seconds
hddd.ddddd° Latitude and Longitude in N/S/E/W Degrees only.
hddd°mm.mmm’ Latitude and Longitude in N/S/E/W Degrees and Minutes only.
hddd°mm’ss.s” Latitude and Longitude in N/S/E/W Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds.
sddd°mm.mmm’ Latitude and Longitude in +/- Degrees and Minutes only.
sddd°mm’ss.s” Latitude and Longitude in +/- Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds.

  • I'm not sure of your point.

Why do you need to see +/- decimal format?

Did you actually try and paste a non +/-decimal lat/lon into Google Maps or OnX?

  • Can't seem to upload the picture I sent to Garmin, but they've acknowledged the issue.

Let's see what they come back with.

I'll break it down for you:

    1) format in: [+/-]ddd.ddddd

    2) format out: [NSEW]ddd.dddd^degree symbol

Have you tried to reproduce this issue yourself?

  • I'm not sure of your task.

If I open Google Maps on my computer an enter N40.69453 W94.54239 into the search box it has no issues moving to that location and shows alternative formats of

    40°41'40.3"N 94°32'32.6"W

    40.694530, -94.542390

  • Ok, I'll clarify how to reproduce this as simply as possible:

    Follow these steps exactly.

    1) Open Garmin BaseCamp

    2) Click on Find -> Locate Coordinates

    3) At "Center at": field, enter the following text: 40.77745, -111.88819

    4) click Create Waypoint

    5) close Locate Coordinates popup

    6) open newly created waypoint by clicking on waypoint balloon.

    7) in Properties tab, copy Position value: N40.77745° W111.88819°

    8) Open windows 10/11 notepad or gnome text editor 46.3, copy the two coordinate values into two separate lines:

    40.77745, -111.88819

    N40.77745° W111.88819°

    9) type on your computer keyboard the second coordinate exactly in your notepad/text editor with the degree symbol included.

    10) reply that you've done all this, step-by-step and show results for each individual step.

    11) start from the beginning of this thread and read it fully three times.

  • I don't need to do what you have written.  Your original posts indicates that you want to copy a Lat/Lon, let's say a waypoint coordinate, and paste it in Google Maps or OnX.  I have no experience with OnX.

When copy-pasting to OnX or Google Maps the preference is to use ddd.ddddd format with +ve or -ve instead of N, S, E, W letters.

Preferred and required are not the same thing.  I can copy N40.77745° W111.88819° from your post.  Open Google Maps on my computer.  Paste it into the search dialog at the upper left and it handles it fine.  It shows a marker on the dome of the Utah State Capital.  I get the same result if I use the position copied from the Garmin Waypoint properties in the same format.

Does this not work on your computer?

  • You're absolutely right—just as long as we disregard the documented issue, the step-by-step reproduction, and basic troubleshooting logic.
