Sending files error

A couple of things. First, whenever I connect my Oregon 550 to the PC, Basecamp gives me a "problem communicating with the Garmin device" error message. Nonetheless, the 550 still shows up on the left side of the window as an attached device. Second, whenever I send a file (track, waypoint, etc.) to the 550 via Basecamp, the file is sent to the "drive letter:\Garmin\GPX\Current" folder. When the gpx file is in that folder, the track or waypoint does not appear in the 550's waypoint or track manager. But, when I move the gpx file out of the "Current" subfolder and up into the "GPX" subfolder, everything works well. Is there a way to change the destination folder for Basecamp? It is a pain to have to send a gpx file and then manually move it so it can be seen in the track or waypoint manager.

Has anyone else encountered this a found a fix?

That error message means that there is an invalid GPX file in your device. In the case of the Oregon 550, that would mean that there is a GPX file in the Garmin/gpx folder that is possibly corrupt or is otherwise an invalid instance of the gpx schema. If you remove the invalid gpx from that folder, the message will go away.

Regarding your second question, the behavior you mention is not consistent with expected behavior. It seems like version 2.0.7 used to behave the way you mentioned, but not 2.0.8. Thank you for reporting this. We will try to address this issue for the next release.

Thanks for responding. I deleted all the gpx files from the unit, but I still get the "problem communicating" type of message. So, I do not think that it is a corrupt gpx file.
  • I don't know if this helps, but after using the averaging function on my 550t, I get a communications error, and the .gpx file cannot be manually opened by either BaseCamp or MapSource.

Here are details reported to Garmin UK.

After using the averaging function on the unit, a connection error occurs in BaseCamp 2.0.8. The issue is caused by the parameter '<gpxx:Samples>2</gpxx:Samples>'. This also causes both BaseCamp ad MapSource to fail to open the .gpx file that contains the averaged waypoint. If the gpss:Samples parameter is removed, then BaseCamp again works..

I have also had the annoying issue with BaseCamp 2.0.8 saving to the wrong directory.

Thanks for the info. I have not used the averaging function and can still use MapSource without any issues. I guess we'll just have to see what the next release brings.

This issue should be corrected by the BaseCamp 2.0.9 release. Please feel free to post if this doesn't correct the error or you have any other questions or concerns.

Although I still get a message re that there is a problem communicating with my device (Oregon 550), the waypoint transfer succeeded. Basecamp combined 5 individual waypoints into a single gpx file labeled "waypoints1.gpx" and sent it to the [drive letter]:\Garmin\GPX\ folder rather than to a subfolder within that folder. So that part is fixed.

Any idea why I am getting the unable to communicate with device message?

Nothing comes to mind just from your description.

If you'd feel comfortable, please zip up your current.gpx file and garmindevice.xml and send it to me via PM. Hopefully taking a look directly will shed some light on what may be giving the error.

    Zhenkel,

I guess I don't have a problem sending those files, but your question about whether I did makes me wonder whether I should. What information is in the files you are asking for?

    FYI

current.gpx is the last know lat lon and tracklog.

The device file is your unit ID and serial number and other generic device information

    Hope this helps

GarminDevice.xml is information about the unit including serial, unit ID, etc.
The files in the GPX folder contain the waypoints, routes and tracks stored on the device. With those files we would see where the device has been which may contain locations you may not wish to share with us such as your home or other places.

The files would only be used for diagnostic purposes to see which is giving the "error communicating with device" message. There is one additional developer (NeoLite) that is much more experienced with BaseCamp's interaction with our devices that I would share the files with. After we have our answer they would be deleted.

Regardless if you'd be willing to share the current error files here's a procedure that should preserve your data and eliminate the errors. Before beginning it would be a good idea to backup the content's of your device's Garmin\GPX folder in case there is data that is inadvertently lost.

    1. Connect the device to the computer and start BaseCamp.
    2. Select your unit from the top list under DEVICES.
    3. From the File menu select Export and choose your device. Save the exported file to a convenient location (such as the desktop).
    4. Shut down BaseCamp
    5. Browse to the Garmin\GPX folder on your device using Windows Explorer.
    6. Delete the contents of this folder including any subfolders.
    7. Restart BaseCamp.
    8. From the File menu select Import and choose the file saved in step 3.
    9. After the import completes select the folder named Recently Imported from ZZZZ, where ZZZZ is the name of the file you just imported in step 8.
    10. From the Edit menu select Send To and in the swing out menu choose your device.
    11. Wait 10 seconds for the the transfer complete and shut down BaseCamp.
    12. Safely eject your device from the PC.
    13. Turn the device back on and verify that all information previously saved to the device is present.

I tested this with a device in the office and it eliminated the pop-up message. Please let me know if it works for you as well.
