Basecamp won't run

I purchased TOPO US 24K West and installed. It seemed to work okay, but I don't think it rendered in realistic 3D. I updated the Basecamp program from garmin's webpage. After the install, it said it could not render 3D and to update my video drivers.

I did update my drivers.

Now when I click on the program, it acts like it's going to go-- I get the splash screen. The splash screen goes and away and nothing happens.

Task Manager says base camp is running and the program shows on the window's taskbar.

I reinstalled the the TOPO disk (both maps and base camp) to no avail.

Help? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the issues that you are having. We have identified issues with the driver check and plan to address them in the future.

In the meantime here is are some options to try to get BaseCamp up and running.

    1) From the start menu choose the run option and type in "%appdata%\..\local\garmin_corp" and delete all subdirectories found there.

    2) Try to launch the application once again.

Please let us know if this worked for you.

Sorry for the difficulties that you're having. Since I never heard back from the original poster I'm not sure if these steps will help with your specific issue or not, but it's a good place to start.

    1) Open the start menu. For Windows Vista or Windows 7 there will be a text box right at the bottom. On Vista this says "Start Search". On Windows XP there is an item near the bottom that says "Run" that you need to click on.

    2) Once you've located the text box paste the following into the box (include the quotes): "%appdata%\..\local\garmin_corp" and hit Enter

    3) A window should appear with one or more folders contained in it. Select all of these folders and delete them.

Hopefully that will clean out whatever setting is preventing startup and let you use the app. If you would like more immediate help you can also contact customer support with the information at http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/us/support/supportcontact. Our product support can work with you more directly than the developers that monitor these boards can.

I to have tried to install Basecamp. The installation completes, but I can never get the program to load. I am running Windows XP. I tried the solution listed above, but still can't get it to run.

    Thanks,

    Ivy,

Is there any error message that appears when you attempt to run BaseCamp? If it fails without any error message it could be one issue that we've just identified as a problem.

On a non-English machine there can be leftover files from BC 2.0.9 that will cause an issue at startup. If this is the case you need to delete the folders in Garmin\BaseCamp with the exception of en and Maps.

The install folder should look as it does in the attached screenshot.
  • Similar problem with Basecamp

This is the error message I get when I attempt to open Basecamp. I'm running XP. There were no issues until I upgraded to the newest version of Basecamp. I've uninstalled the program and loaded again but the same issue.

    Jim,

Unfortunately the error dialog that you are seeing doesn't provide any clues as to what the issue could be. Aside from the other suggestions offered in the thread you can try clearing out the registry entries for BaseCamp.

If you are comfortable doing so the key to delete is at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Settings.

I'd recommend cleaning both the settings from the registry and from the folders as mentioned above before restarting BaseCamp instead of only doing 1 at a time.
  • Thanks for your help but still not resolved. I edited the registry and deleted the files as directed. The install folder looks exactly like the screenshot you attached. Basecamp will still not open.

The only thing that changed is I attempted to install the newest Basecamp version. Is there an older version that I can attempt to reload?

  • Basecamp finally working for me.

After making all the recommended changes in this thread and still no success, I decided to look elsewhere. As a starting point and lucky guess, I reloaded the .NET framework 3.5. This change corrected my problem.
