deleted data keeps reappearing on my GPS device

I use BaseCamp to copy tracks from my Garmin GPSMAP 66i to my PC, rename them and store them in different folders before deleting them from my device.

Whenever I reconnect GPSMAP, I see deleted tracks reappearing again. It seems that I *must* delete them from the GPSMAP itself to clear them from the device.

Is there any other way to keep my device internal memory clear?

How can I make changes made from basecamp persistent?

There is no way that I know of to delete a devices internal data using Basecamp. I suspect you could do it by deleting the track files with a File Explorer while the device is connected to the PC. According to this website, track files are in created with filenames in the form of Track_{date time}.gpx. The website also provides details into the file structure of the GPSMAP 66.

Depends on the device. Data on most 'on the trail' devices can be deleted by BaseCamp but I have no knowledge of the 66i. Renaming and moving data as you describe may be causing the problem

Generally speaking, on gpsmap devices tracks, routes and waypoints saved in the gpx format can be deleted in BaseCamp. I'm not familiar with the latest devices, but it could be possible that the will also save data in both the gpx and fit formats. I could be wrong, but I don't think BaseCamp can delete fit files.

The fit files may have to deleted through Windows Explorer (I think they will be in an Activity folder). I don't know if they can be deleted on the device or via something like Garmin Connect.

I agree that the easiest way to solve this is to delete the .fit files from the device \Garmin\Activities folder using Windows Explorer. You can also delete these on the device one by one in Recorded Activities.
