Oregon 550 and Waypoints

So apparently, the new Oregon 550 is saving waypoints differently than EVERY OTHER Garmin GPS ever made. This requires you to use Basecamp as Mapsource is not setup to find these waypoints.

With all due respect this is crazy.... can someone please have a chat with the development team? Get the waypoints back into the current.gpx file....

    Basecamp adding maps

I recently purchased an Oregon 550 with Garmin GB Discoverer GB National Parks 1:50k loaded on a SD mini card. I then downloaded BaseCamp, but this only has the Global Application Basemap v2. One of
the main reasons I purchased this unit was to enable me to plan and
review routes and tracks on my PC. Disappointingly, Garmin support tell me maps that are preloaded to the microSD card cannot be viewed on a computer as they are locked to the card. The only way to view this information on a computer is by DVD format which is not yet available for the Garmin GB Discoverer.

Firstly I would hope that the DVDs will be available soon.

Secondly I would also like to suggest that routes can be entered by typing in coordinates - I would like to enter a route taken from a printed route card with more than 60 waypoints; entering each one of these into a bank white screen in Basecamp by shifting the mouse very delicately is much too painful.

Thanks for your feedback on BaseCamp. Unfortunately there isn't a way currently in the application to import a set of coordinates from plain text into a route. Here are a few options I can recommend to hopefully make this easier than trying to use the mouse as you mentioned:

    • The Recenter Map dialog (View->Recenter Map) allows text input of coordinates and can then make waypoints from the location that is input. Once all of the waypoints have been input a route can easily be created by selecting all the waypoints in the lower left pane, right clicking and choosing "Create Route from Selected Waypoints"
    • GPS Visualizer can take a list of points in text and convert them into a GPX file for import into BaseCamp. Again once the waypoints have been created they can be bound into the route via the same method outlined above.

Finally, we're investigating the possibility of allowing users to run BaseCamp with maps on SD cards for a future version of the application. Hopefully that will prevent you from having to re-buy a map that you've already purchased.

    Hope these suggestions help.
