Oregon 550 and Waypoints

So apparently, the new Oregon 550 is saving waypoints differently than EVERY OTHER Garmin GPS ever made. This requires you to use Basecamp as Mapsource is not setup to find these waypoints.

With all due respect this is crazy.... can someone please have a chat with the development team? Get the waypoints back into the current.gpx file....

I'm sorry that BaseCamp is not meeting your needs.

The changes are intended to allow BaseCamp to allow live editing of the data on the device instead of requiring users to first download from the device, perform updates and then upload again.

At this time there are no plans to bring this support into MapSource.

Basecamp is fine, but it only displays DEM topo maps. What if you want to use your Oregon 550 with City Navigator? It is extremely clunky in the way it has been designed. Run Basecamp, save file to computer, open file in Mapsource.....

Also making it one way for one GPS out the hundred that you sell confuses the users to a huge extent.

People think that Basecamp is replacing Mapsource. But one program does things the other does and vice-versa. There seems a need to have a better coordinated vision as to the development of the software and of the units.

    I must agree with Red90.
I use City Navigator, MetroGuide Canada and Topo and find things are "Clunky".

    Google Maps

Google Maps can read the Oregan 550 tracks, but not the waypoints. You have to go to Basecamp, then View in Google Maps to get tracks AND waypoints.

Based on feedback we've received the next version of BaseCamp will work with all map products, not just ones that contain DEM data.

Please continue to give constructive feedback on BaseCamp and our other software if there are other opportunities to make it easier to use.
  • Hi there,

I'm sorry to state that Basecamp can't load at all, due to a problem with several map products I have installed on my system.
(e.g. TOPO France, TOPO Swiss etc.)

The programs shuts down with an error msg which refers to those products.
    Everything is OK with MapSource.

To say the truth I'm not particularly fond of BaseCamp
(at last I succeedeed in having it installed on a virtual machine with the default basemap... just to try it...)
but having recently bought an Oregon 550t I discovered that I need BC to download easily the huge amount of data saved into the unit during several days of activity.
(Using MapSource I'm obliged to open two or more instances of that program and make a long and boring cut&paste work)

Also, I'm sorry to say that BC's interface is not as effective as the MapSource's is.
There is an incredibly waste of space... for useless too large icons...
Impossible to arrange a route nor manage a great number of waypoints and tracks !
Not to speak about .NET (sic)

    however...

I would be very grateful if the issue will be fixed ASAP.

Or BETTER... I would be glad if in the next release of 550t firmware there were an option for granting mapsource data transfer compatibility (old xfer system: as other oregons)
    This would be really great.

...and would be better, because BaseCamp doesn't work with automotive cartograpy...

...so one is obliged to switch between BaseCamp and MapSource...

IMO: make BC really reliable and effective before to oblige users to adopt it.

That sounds good. Does this mean MapSource will be discontinued in the future? At least currently, there are a lot of features within Mapsource that are not in Basecamp.

From the outside, there does not to be a very coherent plan for software through the Garmin line and it is confusing users quite a bit. Maybe let the penny pinchers know that this is affecting sales.... It is time to get things better organized.

As I previously stated we are interested in constructive feedback on BaseCamp and our other software.

If there are features in MapSource that are not in BaseCamp that you feel should be included please let us know.

If Mapsource is being phased out, Basecamp needs to include all of the current Mapsource features.

If Mapsource is being kept, then it needs to be able to communicate with all the Garmin units. Right now, if you own an Oregon 550, you need to use both programs.

Exactly what have I said that is not constructive?

Thank you for your feedback. We will consider adding additional functionality available in MapSource to BaseCamp.
