Distance presentation problem

Former Member
Former Member
I have an Oregon 300 with something that may be a problem, or may be I am misinterpreting the data.
Anyway:
After a hike the other day, I wanted to compare the distance covered as presented on the GPS screen with the distance I got out of MapSource.
I copied the values from the track properties dialog box in MapSource in to Excel and added them there.
To my surprise it was a considerable deviation in the two values.
The GPS screen showed 11.1 km (11100 metres) while the corresponding value from MapSource was 13169 metres.
Can anybody give me an explanation to this?
Thanks!

  • I use Mapsource and Basecamp also for automotive GPS devices and have found that if you are off-road the distances you plotted before are off because Mapsource is road related. So probably you are not hiking near roads and therfore Mapsource calculations are off.
