BaseCamp unusably slow to load maps with 965

Hi,

I have the latest version of BaseCamp and a Forerunner 965 connected via USB-C port to the computer on which I run BaseCamp.

I imported a .gpx track that works correctly Garmin Connect but on BaseCamp it is not alligned with the "Global Map". It seems that BaseCamp displays all my gpx tracks in this way, with the map shifted on the west for several hundreds meter.

Loading a serious map, Topoactive Europe 2024, from the 965 storage displayed in BaseCamp under "Device" then the GPS track match with the map however it takes forever to load a small portion of it, few squared km.

I tried to checkif it was possible to cache/download TopoActive maps from the Garmin to BaseCamp but I was not able to find any solution.

Any idea how to solve it?

  • Once BaseCamp has indexed the maps on your device it should read them very quickly in future, mine are almost instantaneous. I suggest you leave the device connected overnight and then all should be OK. If that doesn't help copy the maps to a removeable drive, eg a memory stick, and BaseCamp will read the .img file from there. Note it has to be in a folder named Garmin on the drive.

  • Maps has been indexed in fact when I plug the phone via USB-C BaseCamp expand it immediately and shows the list of maps present in the phone, however when I choose to use The TopoActive Europe one then it has the same slowness. Using the "Garmin DEM Map" then it is "faster", it took just 15 seconds to load.

I tested then to load the TopoActive map in lowest detail and the issues still persist so after 60 seconds just a tiny portion is visible. After 3 minutes in the lowest detail something starts to show up but is is unusably slow.

Using the function to export/copy maps out of the 965, so choosing the menu "Maps" --> Install Maps" it shows me under my 965: "No unlocked maps were found for this device."

So it seems both impossible to save maps both using BaseCamp with the flagship of the Forerunner...

  • Then do as suggested and copy the map files to a removable drive.

  • I would, really. However, as described above, from BaseCamp I cannot export maps and if I open the 965 in windows explorer I cannot find any file concerning maps.

Thanks for letting me know how to fix the issue.

  • Look for .img files on your 965.
