Basecamp route time calculation

Basecamp route time calculation last year was accurate. This year the same route produces a travel time up to four hours greater. Why is this?

All the similar questions here are many years old. Up to now the time calculations were very accurate.

What causes this?

  • Without more detail no one can say. As a start perhaps explain some details about the route, whether BaseCamp has been updated, whether you're using the same routing activity, and does that activity have the same speeds assigned as before?

I assume the route looks exactly the same on the screen in BaseCamp?

  • I have Basecamp 4.75, route was created in 2023, no changes to the route. Maps have not been updated. All files are on my desktop computer, with no changes.

    Assigned speeds have not changed.

Initially the travel time is the same, if I invert the route the travel time increases by several hours, even though the roads traveled have not changed.

Exactly the same route created in Google maps produces a time within minutes of my original time.

One case: route is 338 miles, in Texas, with no cites involved, travel time increased by 3 hours. From 6 to hours to 9 hours. I have driven this route, the 6 hour time is very accurate.

Until now, over a number of years, Garmin's travel times were quite close to actual travel time. Now they are effectively meaningless.

If I create a new route, travel time is abnormally high. In one case the new Garmin route showed a travel time of 10.75 hours, with a distance of 338 miles. The exact same route created with Google maps produces a travel time of 6.5 hours, with distance of 335 miles.

I would really like to know how to recover the accurate Garmin travel times.

  • Difficult to advise as clearly something has changed. I'd expect to see a change in times if you reverse a route but not an increase of 3 hours. Are you able to post the routes here or give the start and end points with the times and distances you're seeing? If so I'll try to duplicate it

  • I guess I do not know how to post the route.

I tried exporting the files to my desktop, (to then send as an attachment) but when I look at the result in Basecamp it no longer shows any time at all.

If I try to recalculate, it changes the routing entirely.

Can you tell me how to attach a route?

  • I think I found an answer.

I noted that the Basecamp map selected (City Navigator NT v 8) was not the most recent.

I changed the selected map to the most recent on my computer (City Navigator North America NT 2022.2)

I then recalculated the routes in question. The travel times are now what they should be.

I do not know how the early version of map got selected, I did know that I had not upgraded maps recently.

That has solved my problem. Must be in the Navigator software, not  actual map roads, because the roads in the route have not changed.

Thanks for your replies and trying to help!!

  • Great, I'll close this thread.
