Basecamp or not?

Is basecamp still the software to use to plan routes on the PC for uploading to Drivesmart 51? I have been useing basecamp for a long time now and because it seemed to not be able to plot a route from Barcelona to Basel I started to look for any problems in the latest update or windows update..

First I found that Basecamp is no longer supported, then I found that Mapsource was now the one to use. I then found that Basecamp replaced Mapsource. I have also found a reference to Homeport, which I also found was no longer supported.

Can anybody tell me what is the current Garmin offering for planning routes on the PC and then importing them to the Drivesmart 51/

    Basecamp is still the SW for route planning. As fa as I know there is nothing else from Garmin.

    I would say that the problem creating a route btw. Barcelona and Basel is a problem of the map you use. With the official Garmin maps I never found a problem routing very long distances. If I try to do the same with my bycicle map then it's impossible.

    BaseCamp development has stopped but it's still the way to plan routes for your DS51, I've used it for years to do exactly that. What issue are you having plotting a route from Barcelona to Basel? Where is it failing? I'm assuming you're using the Garmin CN EU map and that you've installed it to your PC so that BaseCamp can use it? I've just created that route without issue in BaseCamp 

    Note Homeport is aimed at devices used on water and that BaseCamp replaced MapSource over 10 years ago, although you can still download it from Garmin and it works with many older devices, and even very modern ones if they work in mass storage mode.

    I was using the last map update from Garmin City_Navigator_Europe_NTU_2024_20.gmap It wasn't only the route took forever it seems that the loading is really long as well.

    If Basecamp is still the only software I will look for another cause.

    I replied to the first answer before I saw yours. I have the map City_Navigator_Europe_NTU_2024_20.gmap on the PC (something you advised me to do years ago now) and as I said in the other reply, you select the icon to open Basecamp and nothing happens for quite a while then it says it is loading but takes a long time. With regard to the route plotting the progress bar slowly gets to about half way the doesn't seem to progress any further

    I'd try an uninstall and reinstall of BaseCamp then. Note that won't delete any maps or data you have already in BaseCamp

    I have reinstalled the software and simplified the routing request Barcelona Port to Ibis Hotel Basel.

    This was after 10 minutes.

    I have a Dell laptop, win11, Intel i7, 16 GB RAM (closed everything else) From memory it was decidedly faster than this.

    I will install it on another PC and see what that does.

    I Sussamb, I have found the problem! Don't ask me how it happened but the Activity Profile was set to HICKING, it isn't surprising that it would take a long time to find a hicking route between Barcelona and Basel.

    I haven't ever used Hiking so I am puzzeled as to what set it.

    Anyway hours wasted again on the computer. But I can plan the route now.
