How do I use Basecamp New Track function to create a specific route that can be used on a Drivetrack71?

Hello, on Basecamp I created a track using the New Track option on the toolbar. Its simple enough to use. Then added two Waypoints (start & End) to the track. Then moved the track with the two Waypoints to my Drivetrack71 and the track shows up fine. However, when I disconnect my Drivetrack from BC I only get the start and end waypoints that show up in the Where To? Saved selection, no tracks anywhere to be found. The Track I had drawn only shows up when connected back to Basecamp. I was using the Basecamp New Track function to draw a specific path. Anyway, how to I get the Track to show up on my device if at all possible?  If not possible then what would the New Track function on BC be used for if the track won't show up on my Garmin device?

Thanks for any info on this.

  • On my zumo XT, Tracks are different from Routes.  Tracks are accessed by an app named 'Tracks' whereas Routes are accessed with Trip Planner.  I looked at the manual for the Drivetrack71 and did not see any referene to an app named "Tracks" but I did see that it has Trip Planner.  Is there a reason you are creating a track in Basecamp instead of a route?

  • BaseCamp operates with numerous devices that use tracks which is why that function is there. Is the new Drivetrack series compatible with BaseCamp?

  • You could try setting the Activity Profile to Direct in BaseCamp.  Open the track in BaseCamp and convert it to a Route.  Send the Route to your device.  You may have to change the device Profile or Navigation method on your device.  Look for something like "Direct" or "Off Road" in the manual.

  • I was trying to use "Tracks" for a route to see if that method would bypass my Drivetrack 71 always wanting to route be back to a viapoint if I missed it.

  • Yes, I've tried that and I've found what works for what I was trying to do.  That being, planning a route that would stick to the route created on Basecamp for various trails and after transfer to my device not change it if it found a shorter or faster route.  Also, I didn't want my device to tell me to go back to a point (guess via point) if I deviated a bit and missed it.

Also, if I turned my gps off and then on again a little later, I was wanting to be able to just see the route and continue following it instead of having it route me back to the beginning or a missed via point etc.

  • There is a concept of Via points and Shaping points.  A Shaping point is a non-alerting point.  As such, the device will not try to route you back to them if they are missed.  An unknown to me is whether your Drivetrack will handle Shaping points in this way.

To create a Shaping point in Basecamp, first create a route, whether by creating waypoint to control the route, or by creating a route between start and end points and the 'rubbering banding' the route as you want it.  One done, double-click on the route to open its list of route points.  Right click on each route point that you want as a shaping point and select "Don't alert on arrival (shaping point)".

  • Thanks all for your help. Looks like I now know what to do.
