To get way points to show up on a device can they be loaded on to the SD card or do they have to be loaded on to the device drive itself?

No, they should work from the card. They do though need to be in a folder named GPX in a Garmin folder on the card. Any particular reason though why you just don't  put them on your device?

Hi Sussamb,  Thanks for getting back to me.  No particular reason other than that is where I usually put anything installed by BaseCamp or MapInstall.  Anyway while waiting for a response I did remove the way points from the SD card and reinstalled them on the device drive.  Initially that also did not garner any results,however, after I turned the unit off and turned it on later all was as it should be.  I've taken note and will know for the future.

Sadly Garmin has decided to make my unit obsolete so I will no longer get The Europe maps which had a "Life Time Update".  That is all I have used this unit for.  It was such a nice GPS as it came with both North America and Europe maps with "Life Time Updates" but it had an almost 8 hour battery life which made it a great tool for walking around cities in Italy.  I also have an 58LM but its battery life is a joke by comparison (Less than 1 hour.

Anyway enough complaining.  Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

Despite what Garmin say you should still be able to get maps onto your device. Use Express to install them to your PC for BaseCamp then use it to send the map to your device.

I (and a lot of other users) can confirm that you won't get new maps anymore for these devices.

Sadly this kind of situation is true of many electronics.  The life expectancy of most is decreasing with great regularity.  This is not due to a lack of ability to make them long lasting and reliable but rather a business decision to make excessive profits. 

My 58LM will be the last Garmin product I buy since most cars now come with screens and mapping software and my smartphone is better and has more information than any GPS device.  Besides the old 670 still works and I doubt that there will be much information that is new in many of the old city areas in Europe anyway..

Fair enough. I far prefer my Garmin to my phone or built in satnav. I do a lot of route planning at home using BaseCamp and send routes and waypoints to my Garmin. Google maps is fine if I just want to blindly follow a route it's chosen but for most of my driving that's not what I need.
