Basecamp Autoconnects the start and end point of a route?

I am planning a hike based on several sections of other hikes. I download the GPXes as route, cut of the sections I dont need and merge the routes to one long route. This goes well, but for some merges Basecamp decides to instantly connect the endpoint of one route with the starting point of the other, making it a circular route, but with the last leg 'as the crow flies'.

why? And how can I prevents this from happening?

Sounds like you're joining them in the incorrect order. When joining multiple routes you need to select them in the order you want them to join. The endpoint of your first route will join to the start of your second, the endpoint of your second to the start of your third etc.

Use Ctrl + enter to select the routes in the correct order and all should be fine.
