Garmin Base Camp with Europe maps

I have installed the SD card for all of Europe into my Garmin and now I am trying to use Basecamp to plan routes across countries in Europe. Planning routes within one country, no problem. Planning a route from one country to another I get a straight line. It appears Basecamp cannot plan routes across countries. Is this right? Thanks.

  • Thank you all for your advice. In the end what I plan to do is the simplest. Plan my route 1 to the German/French border, then plan route 2 from the border to my French destination. When I cross the border I stop route 1 and switch to route 2. Not elegant but it works.

  • The real point is that only being able to only access one map at a time in BaseCamp does not prevent the creation of a single route.  A Direct route that is converted to a different Profile with the Global map should work on the device.

As another example, a motorcyclist might download a track with a very indirect route on minor roads.  Here it would be easier to divide the track, convert each to a direct route, limiting the number of points.  Each route can be checked and altered if needed using the desired profile before joining the direct routes.

As for the OP, the kml file indicates where the crossing occurs.

But I agree that creating a route on the device can be the quickest method in lot of cases.  But there are also times when using BaseCamp will be the best choice.  In that case, the imperfect device route should give a good indication of where to cross the border.

As an aside, routes that are imported into BaseCamp are not recalculated until a change occurs. I assume this is also true for routes downloaded from a device. Changing maps won't trigger a reacalculation either.

  • Another approach is to use another custom map.

One that covers the region of the area you are doing routes in.

These maps are free. They use Openstreetmap. which might not match the source of the map data used on your card.

I think your device supports Unicode.

I create a virtual USB drive using the following software. Be sure to indicate that the drive is removable. Otherwise. Basecamp won't find it.

Copy the *.img file to \Garmin on the virtual drive and then run BaseCamp.
