Can BaseCamp connect to Drivesmart 76 via WiFi? (For the purposes of transferring data)

I recently migrated from a Tom Tom Go 620 to a Garmin Drivesmart 76. With the Tom Tom computer Software (Tom Tom My Drive) it is possible to send routes and places to the device over the WiFi, therefore eliminating the need to remove the device from the vehicle for the purposes of data transfer.

You imagine my disappointment when I came to the realisation that this is not possible with the Drivesmart, even though it has WiFi capability.

I am hoping I might have this wrong and would appreciate any advice available.

Eagerly awaiting some positive feedback.

Barry.

  • Simple answer is no. If you want to send data from BaseCamp you need to use cable.

  • The Drivesmart 76 is compatible with the Drive app. I'm not familiar with this device, but with other devices it is possible to send routes and places wirelessly to the device with the Drive app from your smartphone. Probably the same applies to the Drivesmart 76.

  • I may be wrong, but I dont think Drive gives you the option to plan a route, and the screen is too small to work with anyway. It is fine for finding and sending a location, but I am referring to defining a quite complex route, with specific directions, maybe over a few hundred kilometres. Hope I am wrong.

  • You can't plan a route with Drive, but there are several third party online planners you can use for that. Or use BaseCamp: plan your route, export it to a GPX file, mail the GPX file to yourself, open it on your smartphone with the Drive app and send it to your Drivesmart.

  • Thanks for the suggested strategy. That sounds like a solution I would maybe use of the odd trip. Sending more than one or two would probably make connecting with a cable justified. Care to mention the online planners you reccomend? I dont mind the Basecamp, has some nice shortcuts to define a route.

  • I think this issue can be simplified by saying that a route created in BaseCamp must be exported to a .gpx file and that file can then be transferred to the device via wifi provided you can get that file from your PC onto a wifi device that runs the Drive app which then connects to the Garmin device.  I my case, I attached the file to an email sent to myself from my PC, I then retrieve that email on my phone, and then I share that attachment with the Drive app which automatically sends it to my XT.  Note: I use an iPhone which only allows me to 'share' an attachment.  I understand that the process is a little more intuitive on an Android phone.  Alternatively, I can connect my phone to my PC, copy the .gpx file to it, and then share that file with the Drive app.

  • Thanks for the response, I will give it a go.

  • Hello Peobody! I just bought a Garmin Drive 76 and was also disappointed that I cannot transfer favorites and routes directly from Basecamp to the device. I then found your solution. It works fine, also with my iPhone. But am I right, when I open the .gpx only the waypoints are transferred and not the route? I have to create a new route on the device or did I make a mistake? Thnaks for your reply! Mark

  • It depends on what was in the .gpx file.  My point of reference is only with a zumo XT, so based on that, here is what I can tell you.

When you export from BaseCamp, you can export just waypoints, just the route (which includes the waypoints), or an entire list folder which contains all waypoints and routes within it.  Whatever is exported ends up in one .gpx file.  With the XT...

If that .gpx file contains only individual waypoints, I can import them into the XT as Saved waypoints.

If that .gpx file contains only a route, I can import that into Trip Planner.  That process will also import all waypoints contained in the route into Saved waypoints.

If that .gpx file contains both routes and waypoints then I can import the waypoints separately from importing the route into Trip Planner.

So, my suggestion is to go into Basecamp, select a single route in the lower left pane, then export it using File > Export > Export selection.  Transfer the resulting .gpx file to your Drive 76 and see what you have.

  • Thanks! It took some time - but now the route is on the device. I am happy - hope to end even happier when I finish by driving the route I planned on the "hardware" map Slight smile
