Install maps on computer

Many, many years ago, I bought a 3-cd set of Garmin MapSource TOPO maps (USA) for use with my GS64 unit.  Years later (MapSource  having died), I switched to BaseCamp and was able to get the TOPO maps to work with BaseCamp (i.e., to detailed view, rather than just to basic overview).   I'm now in the process of setting things up on a brand new computer (HP desktop), but, for the life of me, I can't seem to install those maps in the BaseCamp on the new computer.  Anybody have any ideas on how to accomplish this.

  • Do you still have access to the old computer, if so simplest way is to use JaVaWa's GMTK program

  • The oldest versions of the 100k Topo maps for MapSource did not copy the maps to the hard drive - you had to insert a disc in order to view the map.  BaseCamp discontinued the access of maps from a CD.  The work around for this would was:

Create a new folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Garnin

Copy the East, West, Alaska, Hawaii folders on the first(?) CD to your new folder

Now comes the fuzzy part of memory.  You will need to edit the registry to point to the folder you created.  Run regedit and what you are looking for should be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  You are looking for: HKEY...>Software>Garmin>Mapsource>Products.

You will need to open each of the sub folders and look for a file path under that Data column (e.g. D:\) and click on the entry in the Name column on the same line (it used to be Loc, but I think it has been change to Dir or InstallDir or something else).  Under the Edit menu select Modify and change it to the folder you created.

Example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garnin\USTopo where USTopo is the folder you created into which to copied the files from the CD.

    EDIT

You may have to include the file folder - C:\Program Files (x86)\Garnin\USTopo\West
