BaseCamp symbols and Garmin DriveSmart 86

I have Garmin DriveSmart 86.
I create map data (way-points/POI/routes) in BaseCamp.
Info points include symbols (various designs and colors provided by BaseCamp) to identify and group types of info (home, accommodation, church, sports, animals, etc).
I transfer data to GPS, but all info points are displayed as green block with white hart?
I now have to change every single individual point (more than 200) on the GPS through "edit" to give it some other symbol (all are green and white)?
When I transfer them back to BaseCamp all the symbols are blue flags?
What is the use of colorful symbols in BaseCamp?
What is use of symbols in DriveSmart GPS? (nothing is Smart!)
How do I correct this issue?
Will making a POI file solve this problem and preserve the symbols?
Is there a file I can edit (HTMLHexEdit) to add symbols, even the green ones in GPS?

  • Afraid BaseCamp was never designed to send symbols to or accept symbols from many recent Garmin devices and there is no longer a BaseCamp team at Garmin, so it is what it is. Some handheld devices accept custom symbols which allows some alterations from what they are sent by BaseCamp but the Drive series doesn't have that capability.

  • Thanks SUSSAMB

Have read your other remarks on the subject of Garmin's unwillingness to correct an obvious and ridiculous mistake on their side. That is why I already indicated and requested assistance to the file that keeps the data. That is the core of the question. The DriveSmart device does have different symbols that it can display already built in.

I have identified the file (GPX/Current.gpx) that has the names and data of the info points (<wpt lat="-15.110878" lon="36.822982"><name></name><desc></desc><extensions><gpxx:WaypointExtension><gpxx:Categories><gpxx:Category></gpxx:Category></gpxx:Categories></gpxx:WaypointExtension></extensions></wpt>) that I have logged on the device. The name and the grid reference is clearly shown, However, the symbol I have attached to the info point is not listed in that file. The device does have different symbols on the map when I view it. Therefor, all we need is the file that links the info point to the symbol and we can then change the symbol that is displayed. It will be much easier than to open all 200+ info points on the device, then edit them and allocate a symbol.

By the way, if BaseCamp was not designed to send or receive symbols then it does not imply that Garmin cannot spend a few minutes enabling the GPS that they make, to accept from and report back, the symbol to BaseCamp, just as it is accepting the other fields of an information point. If the categories can be transfered, why not the symbol.

May I please request the we do not provide answers to explain why we cannot, but rather serve the customer and getting a solution to improve the product. The amount of people asking for this solution is plentiful and the few code lines to enable it is minimal.

  • Well while you may wish it so I doubt there is enough demand. The place to make suggestions to Garmin is here

    www.garmin.com/.../

  • Thanks for the suggestion link.

Any inputs to solving the question? As I indicated the question is not about Gamin's short coming, but the file and location with the relevant data.

  • No idea I'm afraid but don't think it's possible to do what you want. If it was I'm sure lots of us would know about it and be doing it.
