Attempting to convert track to route results in a route with only 2 points

Windows 10, Basecamp v4.7.5

When I attempt to convert a track (with many points) to a route, I get a route with only the start and end points, which are the same place.  The route says it's 250 miles, but there are no directions, just the two points.  This happens most of the time.  Sometimes, for reasons I don't know, it kind of works.  I've tried switching the route options and that doesn't seem to have an effect.

I've tried deleting all the points in the track (read this online somewhere) and creating a route, which again results in the 2-point route.

Occasionally, when it kind of works, the route skips around places where it thinks there isn't a road, instead of there being an option (that I can find) to force a route segment between 2 points.  This seems to be because Basecamps maps are missing lots of smaller roads, at least where I live.

How do I create a route that matches a track exactly, turn by turn.

  • Way I do it is with the track displayed start a new route using the start and end points of the track. Let BaseCamp create the route based on those two points. Now rubber band the route as needed so it matches the track.

  • Thanks, but that doesn't seem very practical, especially given the incredibly clunkiness of the Basecamp UI.  For a 300+ mile route with nearly as many turns, it would take more hours to create than to actually ride.

Since we have, y'know, computers, I'm kinda hoping that I could get the software to do what it says it can do.

  • The track I'm trying to convert is the one in green.

  • Also depends on the map, all of that track may not be part of the routable map. You either do it the way I suggested or follow the track instead.

  • I know that a track, created from a route in BaseCamp, will convert back to a route that follows the original track, but all of the interim route points are lost.  This indicates to me that the source of your track has left out information that BaseCamp needs.  I also know that the route created by BaseCamp from the track will be modified by any device that recalculates it so I agree with that the only sure way to get a reliable route is to create one that follows the track.

  • Before you convert the track to a route you will need to set the active Activity Profile to Direct.  This will allow you set the number track points used to create the route.  You will have to find the limitations for Direct Routes and/or Calculated Routes.  (If the current Activity Profile is a motorized vehicle, BaseCamp will make the two point route).

Once you have the Direct Route, the Activity Profile can be changed in the Route Properties pop-up and it should keep the points.  You may have to change the Activity Profile or avoidances within the Profile to get the best fit.  Additional editing may be required to get the final match,

If the map does not contain routable features, then changing the Activity Profile will have no effect.

  • I'm not sure why you want to use a route when you have a track already.

But apart from all the tips here it is common that you can convert a route into a track with no additional effort. You can choose how many route points you want. And the route is alwas created as 'direct'. You can change that afterwards. Of course, your map must support autoroute.
