Why does loading a map to BaseCamp from a connected Nuvi 2699 device take so long?

I am using BaseCamp for the first time. after connecting my device, after about 10 minutes, the program stops responding. Why does data transfer to and from devices take so long.

You can't load a map from your device to BaseCamp. What does happen is that BaseCamp has to index any map on a device so that it can display it, this should only happen on first use, after that it should be pretty much instantaneous.

If BaseCamp stops responding when doing this, and initially it may take a while, check your PC isn't shutting down your usb port.
