What use is Basecamp?

Trying to take more advantage of my Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire. I know there are ways to get better maps on the device, navigation, etc. I also have All Trails and would love to start being able to view the track on my watch.

I found two apps via some quick googling: basecamp and Garmin express. The latter seems to be just for updating software. Basecamp seems to be for updating maps on the watch; however, some more recent posts say that the Garmin Connect app on a mobile phone can generally update maps.

Do I need the Basecamp app for what I'm trying to do?

  • Probably not.

Garmin Express (will update the maps that come with your watch.

Though, I think the watches can get map updates in other ways (maybe, it's the Garmin Connect app).

Using tracks from All Trails won't be a problem. You can export a GPX file and copy it to the watch (to \Garmin\NewFiles, I think). Or import the track into the Garmin Connect website as a course and sync it with your watch.
