BC dropping map terrain detail after installing maps from device to hard drive

After using Garmin express to load my device maps to the PC when I open up BC the shading and terrain detail is gone and the map looks flat and at lower resolution. I have tied everything, reinstalling BC, deleting and installing the maps again. Also when I reconnect my device I can't seem to select the device map. Screen shots below

  • I can't see your links but BaseCamp can only view one map at a time, so that may be why terrain shading etc is missing.  Have you though set map detail to highest?

Could you ever view the map from your device in BaseCamp? If so confirm the map isn't now showing in the map list? Note if you've installed the map on your PC for BaseCamp to use you should see it listed twice.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply, new to adding picture, hopefully the ones below work.  The device is a BMW Nav VI

Map details set to highest doesn't change the terrain not showing.  Yes after doing the first install and after reinstall I can see the terrain detail from the Nav VI map in BC.

After using Garmin express to transfer a copy of the Nav VI maps to the PC the problem starts.

  • I'm now able to see the pics but I'm not sure there is anything wrong. BaseCamp can only display one map at a time and generally the map and the terrain are separate maps on your device. What is listed in BaseCamp in the map list when your device is connected? I would expect to see 2 different entries for the CN map, one will be on your PC and the other from your device. Is that what you see? Are there any other maps shown apart from those 2 and the global map?

  • So the Map from the Nav VI, before installing the maps on my PC, shows the terrain detail when the Nav VI map is selected, so if the map and terrain are separate maps it is showing them both at the same time?

Pics attached show the map options before and after connecting the Nav VI. The other problem is that I can't select the Nav VI maps once they are installed to the PC

  • So what happens when you try to select the map in the drop down list that shows them? If it won't select a map from your device you'll need to try uninstalling then reinstalling BaseCamp. Note your maps from your Nav are never installed to your PC, they are read from your Nav when it's connected.

  • It doesn't let you select the device maps. When click on them the drop down closes but does not select the map.

I thought Garmin Express allows you to install maps to computer, mine does? What I'm thinking is that it doesn't install the full featured map?

Still not sure why it doesn't allow me to select the device map after I've install the maps to the computer? I've tried on my desk and laptop with fresh installs and both do the same thing.

  • Sorry there is confusion here. You said you couldn't select the Nav maps once they were installed to the PC. Those maps aren't installed to the PC, they are just read from your Nav once its connected as shown in your lower pic above. You can use Express to install the complete map to your PC, it can then be used without your Nav being connected.

So which map is it that you cannot select from the drop down list as earlier you just stated it was the Nav maps?

Note if you're sure you've installed the full map to your PC and it's that map that you cannot select I'd first try reinstalling the map. If you still cannot select it then uninstall and reinstall BaseCamp and see if that helps. Note doing so won't affect the installed map. Given though that in your screenshots they are ticked it seems to be selected.

If it's one of the 2 Nav maps what makes you think they aren't being selected?

  • Hi, thank you for all your help with this, yes I am confused but I think I have worked it out. I did  a fresh install of BC and Garmin Express. If you install the pas to your PC using Garmin express it gives you a more detailed map than the Global Map but not as detailed as having the device plugged in.

Before the reinstall the issue was that BC was not selecting or letting me select the device maps.

After new install on  my PC first photo is before I have connected any device and global map is the only option.

I then connected my device and get the maps showing from the device

I then close BC and install the maps using Garmin Express to my PC

I close Garmin Express and open BC without my device connected to the PC. I get these map options. The city Navigator map is selected automatically but is missing the terrain detail. While being named the same as the map on the device it obviously does not have all the same layers of detail in it/

I then reconnect my device and it auto selects the device map and the terrain detail is back

  • Great, so it sounds as though its behaving as it should now.
