Imported points to creating route

I have a GPX file from google I created around 240 points, now I imported it into Basecamp and want to create a route from those points. Except it seems incredibly difficult to do.

For one the list of points is very oddly sorted; they all go numerical 1,2,4 etc but basecamp sorts them like 1,10,100,101 etc and there is no way to sort numerically?

Next I can't create a route all in one go, I start with the start point and end point (its a loop) and there is no way to drag and drop the rest of the points into the route? I have to add each one at a time, I don't want to spend 3 hours doing this.

  • BaseCamp does sort them numerically but not the way you might expect. That cannot be changed.

To create a route using multiple points hightlight all the points in the lower left hand pane, right click the selection and choose create route from selected points.  Note though this will create a route from 1st point in list to second, then 2nd to 3rd etc. This is unlikely to be what you want. There are a couple of ways around this.

First, use Ctrl + click to select individual points in the order you want them in the route, once they are all selected then right click the selection etc as above.

Second, if you're using a routeable map, and that screenshot appears to be CN NA, then create a separate route and modify it so it travels past all those flags, this assumes you don't want every individual point to appear in your route but just a route that passes them.

Note though that modern Garmin devices cannot normally deal with more than 29 viapoints in a route, so if your aim is to navigate this route using a DriveSmart or similar creating a route using 240 individual waypoints won't work on the device, so my second option above will need to be used.

  • BaseCamp sorts alphabetically - numbers are treated as characters.  Names made from numbers require the same number of characters with leading zeros if necessary (e.g. 001 instead of 1).

You should break your waypoints into 3 lists (1 thru 9, 10-99 and 100-end).  Create two empty lists (if your waypoints are not already in a list, create one and place all your points in that list first).  Points 3 thru 9 should be at the end of your list click on 3, shift-click on 9, then drag and drop them to an empty list. Next, Edit>Remove (not delete) these selected points from the list.  Move points 1 and 2 to the list with 3-9 and then remove as before.

Zoom in to see the all the points from 10 thru 100.  Use the arrow selection tool to draw a box around Waypoints 10-99 (start above and to the right of all your points and don't worry if you get a few extra points), move these points to the remaining empty list and remove them from the current list. If you picked up a few >=100 points, select them and move them back before removing them from the 10-99 list.

If you wish to correct your numbering, export the lists 1-9 and 10-99 separately as gpx files.  Use Open With and choose Notepad (make sure the Always Open ... box IS NOT checked).  Then use Edit Replace to replace <name> with <name>00 for the 1-9 list and <name>0 for the 10-99 list using the Replace All.  Save the changes.  You can then import the files into tthe >=100 list and "Remove And Delete..." the 1-9 and 10-99 lists.

Start in the 1-9 and change the routing profile to Direct.  Creat a route using points 1 and 2 then close the property box.  In the lower left pane, select point 3-9. Click and hold to drag the points onto the Route name in the lower left pane.  They should be appended to the route at the end and be in proper order.  Move the Route to the list with points 10-99.  Select all the points, drag and drop onto the Route.  Repeat with >=100 list.

If you did correct the names, create the list with points 001 and 002; then select, drag and drop the remaining points as above.

Keep in mind all the points regarding Routes in SUSSAMB's post.
