BaseCamp WayPoint Names?

In Basecamp Library I have the following 2 Folders and List structures.

Folder_Local_Routes->Folder_Clinic->List_Home_to_Clinic
                                                                    ->List_Clinic_to_Home
            I have a route in each List with names matching it's List.
            (i.e these are custom routes going and coming)
I have a Waypoint named Home and Waypoint named Clinic in the Folder_Clinic.
I have a Waypoint named Home and Waypoint named Clinic in both routes.
------------------------------------------------------
Folder_Long_Routes->Folder_Condo->List_Home_to_Condo
                                 ->List_Condo_to_Home
            I have a route in each with names matching it's List.
            (i.e these are custom routes going and coming)
I have a Waypoint named Home and Waypoint named Condo in Folder_Condo.
I have a Waypoint named Home and Waypoint named Condo in both routes.
------------------------------------------------------
I don't what I did different?
But when I open the route in either of the Folder_Clinic lists, they show the same spelling of Waypoints Home and Clinic in both Clinic List routes. This is fine, no problem.

But when I open the route in either of the Folder_Condo Lists, one List's Route has the same Waypoint spelling of Home and Condo and the other List's Route Postfixes the Name to Home2 and Condo2.

Just curious why the same Waypoints have matching names in both Clinic List routes, but Basecamp postfixes extra numbers on the same Waypoints in Each List of both Condo List Routes?  I must have done something different setting these up but not sure what?

  • I didn't see an Edit, but the next to the last sentence was worded wrong, It said->on the same Waypoints in Each List of both Condo Lists?  But I meant to say->on the same Waypoints in Each List of both Condo Routes?

  • This instruction is for macOS but likely the same for Windows. To make a "duplicate" of a waypoint in another list simply drag the waypoint from one list to another - Basecamp will create a duplicate with exactly the same name. If you copy and paste from one list to another Basecamp creates a *copy* and affixes #'s accordingly as you're seeing. Hope this is the solution you're looking for.

  • BaseCamp is a database so names must be unique as those names are only pointers to the same piece of data. However those names can exist in different lists etc if you duplicate the waypoint in another list, if you do that any changes made in one list are duplicated in any other list.  If you copy a waypoint then it is given a unique name, and changes to the original do not affect the copy.  At some point therefore you have created a copy and not a duplicate.

  • Thanks TekRider, you and Sussamb have enlightened me on this.

  • Ok, I see the logic now (I think) since the both the Clinic Folder Lists show the same spelling of beginning & ending Waypoints in both Clinic List routes (when opened to see the via points). It's been awhile ago but I think I created each of those routes from scratch by typing in (the search box) the existing Begin and End Waypoints.

    But the Condo List routes (when opened to see the via points) do not have the same spelling of same waypoints except the first List and route I created in that Folder. And I did in fact duplicate the original route and copy it to the 2nd list.

    So you've answered my question, Many Thanks for that.
    Now my curiosity is see if there's a way to fix this where all my list routes are utilizing the same original Begin and End Waypoints for all lists in that folder. <-

    -EDIT ADD, I experimented with several trial Lists and Routes later and found that answer would be NO.

    Not even the begin and end pts (which normally would not move) are not allowed to be inserted in a Route copied or (Sent to another List).

    However I noticed that you can copy a List or Route and still have same spelling pts, but on that I verified what I read from other posts on this forum if you change any location of pts that are spelled the same in the Original (or any Copy), then ALL the other copied (or Original) List Routes that share references to that same spelling will change their routes also.

    Which would (to me) pretty much nullify any reason to copy a Route to another List. Too many undetermined outcomes depending on how much copying was done in Basecamp.
    Now you could edit the Postfixed Name (in a Duplicated Route) to a more clear spelling like Begin Home  and End Dest as long as what your edit does not share the same spelling as any other point.<-END EDIT ADD

  • Thanks 2271429, somehow I missed that yesterday.
