that option never appears - and in this process I've updated software and maps multiple times.
used the 'reset to defaults and keep data' - no difference
used the 'reset and wipe out all data' - no difference
resetting to factory required an update of device and maps.
set BaseCamp to run in win10 and Win8 mode - no difference.
dug out an old Win10 laptop that I previously used - and it worked - no difference
we have a road trip in the works, that's why I was setting up all the destinations.
when that is complete, the trash gets picked up on Wednesdays, and it will have a DriveSmart 66 in it.
thanks for the interest, but I'm done - started with a Nuvi, it ends here.
If that option isn't there you either have never updated the map on your device or you bought a Travel Edition. Alternatively the device is faulty. A call to Product Support to explain all this will result in them replacing the device if its faulty.
What's strange in your comments is that a reset to factory does not delete maps.
the DS66 has the new fancy auto WiFi updating. not long after I got it, parked in the garage, turn off the engine, DS66 said checking for updates.
found an update, estimated time to update 3 hours, battery lives one hour. did not register with me, at that time.
unit was totally trashed after it's WiFi update. you'll note, all the instructions say do not turn unit off during an update....
apparently "be sure the unit is plugged in before updating" somehow is not recognized by the Garmin design.
so I send email to tech support. got an acknowledgment "Your email has been received."
that was well over a year ago, I'm still waiting for Garmin tech support to respond, so you'll have to forgive me for my lack of enthusiasm in not bothering with Garmin support.
I have never used Garmin Express, directly, to update the maps - in decades. I use BaseCamp - which one could not unreasonably expect to function in a similar fashion. and I have never ever in decades been offered the option of download to device, or device and pc. NEVER. and I know this because I often wished to be able to plan a trip/destinations without plugging the unit into the PC. so I'm not oblivious to the situation.
Garmin as simply outstripped their competence with features and doodads that, if they fail, there is no fix.
you are quite obviously the most knowledgeable individual on this Forum. an error message you've never seen, or heard of, and no clue as to how to fix, well . . . that's telling. do you not have a inside line to the Garmin nerds to find out where/how such an error message is generated?
As I've said, call Product Support if you wish to pursue this further. I'm afraid I can't offer any other suggestions other than you may have a faulty device, or without knowing you have bought a Travel Edition, as what you're describing is atypical of normal devices.
I bought the DS66 in January 2022.
it functioned perfectly with BaseCamp since Day 1
so, , , , obviously it was / is not a crippled up "Travel Edition"
atypical, yeah. that's an understatement.
no way to force a map update.
no way to force a device update.
BaseCamp forced update is easy - delete, clean registry, reinstall latest.
nothing has solved the problem.
it's apparently not a problem because only a raft of current and prior users have reported 'product does not support address search"
as I said, Garmin has exceeded it's competence.
Travel Editions do work with BaseCamp but as per the link you cannot download maps to your computer using Express. Since you can't do that it is possible that you have a travel edition. Call Product Support. They will be able to confirm whether that is true or not and if not do more detailed troubleshooting than can be done via a forum.

??? BaseCamp doesn't update maps on the device. BaseCamp expects the maps to be provided.
Yes, he's confused though as from his earlier posts he thinks BaseCamp is copying the maps from his device when it's simply indexing them so it can use them.
"BaseCamp doesn't update maps on the device."
sorry, but that is totally wrong.
MapInstall installs maps.
BaseCamp just runs MapInstall.
