How do I avoid these straight routes with my 62S

OK, so in this map my house is to the south.
A few days ago I went to Abbott Lake to the right on the map and saved the track.
Yesterday I turned my 62S on at Mcleese Lake on the left on the map and tracked my route to Kestrel Lake, saved the track and turned the unit off.

So why does it now show "Mcleese to Kestrel" on the route from our home to Abbott Lake with a straight line going to yesterday's starting point at Mcleese Lake?
My maps are full of these straight lines all over the place, frustrating...
... and how do I get rid of all these straight lines?

The straight lines are appearing because after you saved your track, your device recorded a few more new track points before you powered it down. We’ve all done it! Your next track then starts with these recorded points from the previous location and then adds the points from your new track.

To avoid this in future you need to clear the track log as soon as you have powered up your device and before you start the next trip.

To get rid of these you have to open each track separately in BaseCamp and manually select and delete the points at the start of the track that generate the straight line. These can easily be identified by looking at their date and time stamps to spot the discontinuity. You can use the undo button in the edit tool bar if you make a mistake.

I'm getting ready to try to transfer everything to an Oregon 600 so I'm sure I'm going to have lotsa questions.
Looking forward to the touch screen, the 62S is pretty archaic to use.

Once I delete all those straight lines, I then have to send the map to the 62S, right? That will get rid of them on the unit as well?

You don't send the map, you send the tracks. If you do delete the originals from your device first.
