Map detail for TopoActive Americas not visible in BaseCamp

I cannot get Basecamp to display the detailed TopoActive North America 2022 10 maps. All it that the screen displays is the base streets. The maps are newly updated in my 18-month-old 32x. I can see the details on the device itself. I have a new Windows 10 computer (actually two – and each has the same problem). I have moved from Windows 7 where the maps displayed as expected. The map detail prior to updating today also did not show. Garmin Express performed as expected on the new computer to update the maps. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Basecamp 4.7.4.0. It took almost an hour for Basecamp to slowly recognize the newly updated map but they are now shown in the taskbar to the left of the map (listing North America in my device and Central America in my memory card.) Detail is set for high in the BaseCamp tool bar. I have used this device and two Etrex before it coupled with Basecamp with high functionality for years. I have never had this issue. What did not happen – what do I do to fix. I see that this comes up generally in past forums but all suggestions are off the mark of my issue.

  • See here for coverage https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/730831#coverage

There isn't detailed coverage over all of the map, are you looking at an area where there is detailed coverage?

  • Thanks for the reply. The detailed streets should be visible in BaseCamp because they are visible on the device - and in 6 years of use with older operating systems/computers I always saw the detail in BaseCamp. Refer to my photo where the device view is on the left and BaseCamp view on the right for the same area. I emailed Support my issue. Hoping to hear back or get a solution from the community.

  • That screenshot is better as it looks like only the Basemap is selected. Check you haven't selected Basic map only in the View menu,

  • That is not the case, wish it was that simple. Right now the maps menu on the the toolbar when displayed reads (top to bottom) Global Map; TopoActive Americas Central; and TopoActive Americas North. North is checked - you cannot check more than one at a time. And in the View menu from that toolbar there is a selection that reads Basic Map Only - that is not checked, I have clicked this on and off to make sure it made no difference. That is the gist of my issue: Basecamp for me appears as if "Basic Map Only" has been selected when it has not been.

Please leave this thread open for now because I am still at wit's end. Going away for a few days and then will come back to bang my head on this some more. Things that I have tried since I first posted: tried different USB cables, different ports. I found a legacy BaseCamp version and installed that to see if it helped - nope. So now I am back to the newest version. One thing I discovered in a pinch is match my tracks to the "Bird'sEye Imagery" That would upload an old topographic map that my track will overlay on the screen. But that map is certainly not as good as an updated TopoActive North America map. Since I knew I would be away, my only outreach to Garmin support was an email submission. When I come home I will try a phonecall.

  • You could try running JaVaWa's GMTK program to see if that shows any issues, otherwise I'm out of ideas

  • Solved by poking around some more. I had assumed that TopoActive Americas North would include all of Continental US (as well as Canada of course) and TopoActive Americas Central would be from Mexico south. I am in Los Angeles and all of the Base Camp "failures" that I had been reporting where when I had "North" as the selected map. Just now while searching around, I randomly zoomed into Edmonton AB and noticed all the street detail that I had been looking for. So I recentered the BaseCamp map on Los Angeles and selected "Central" instead. Bingo. Everything is there as I expected. Looking around the US I found that selecting North gave me the street detail for Orlando Fl. Yet when I zoomed in on Salt Lake City UT, the street detail is missing unless I select South. (see my image). You cannot select both North and Central - at least I cannot. Since TopoActive Americas North & Central is included built-in with a purchase of many Garmin hand helds, this is a pretty important tip for frustrated users. Perhaps my update redistributed map data in the device/micro SD in a way that you just have to try both in Base Camp to get street detail needed

  • That's why I said at the start to check you were looking at an area of the map that had detailed coverage, glad you resolved it, I'll close this thread.
