Bug en Request Basecamp 4.7.4

Bug en Request Basecamp 4.7.4

I hope I am at the right place to report the bug and do a small reuqest.

BUG:
Today I will receive my Garmin XT.
But before that one I had a 220, 660 and a LM 595.
I use the Gamin GPS devices on my motorbike.

How to work/use Basecamp I followd a class called: Videocursus Garmin Basecamp.
The class is 4 hours and was very useful for me.
Bought the videoclass on DVD at: https://www.mrgps.nl/
That was some years ago and now it's a on-line class.

Found a lot of nice routes on the internet.
However, much of them are old and need to be adjusted to the latest maps.
So how do I do this?

- Load the route into Basecamp 4.7.4.
- Rightclick the route and select: Duplicate
- Set the color of the original route to red and for the duplicate I use magenta.
- Doubleclick on the duplicate magente route and press the button: Recalculate
After recalculation I can clearly see were the routes are diffrent and I can try to correct it.

Then often, all is still not right.
VIApoints outside the route, streets that have been closed etc. etc.
Often it is easy to adjust those problems but sometimes it is better to recreate the route.

This is how I do this:

Load the route into Basecamp 4.7.4. and make it's color red.
Place a Waypoint near the same startpoint of the original route.
Then I select New Route tool and start drawing from the Waypoint using the color magenta.
I don't draw several kilometers from the Waypoint but a few hunderd meters.
After drawing I select the tool: Move Point.
I use te tool te replace the VIApoint as far as possible BUT the route must stay the same as the original one.
When Basecamp (at a certain point) draws a complete new route from the Waypoint to the first VIA point I know I
have gone to far with replacing the first VIApoint.
So, using the Move Point tool, I set the VIApoint back to it's previous point on the map.

After this, I select again the New Route tool.
Click on the first VIA point and draw again several hunderd meters.
Then again, I select the Move Point Tool and do the same as I wrote above.

So at a certain point I have two routes that I want to join together.
Select the first part from Way Point to first VIApoint, press CTRL on the keyboard and select: Join Selected Routes.
Before finally joining the routes I get the message: A new joined route has been created. Would you like to delete the original routes?
I always press the button Yes because they are not of any use to me anymore.

And here is were the bug is.
After pressing YES, Basecamp creates the route from the two I had drawn but doen NOT delete the original routes.
Have also started Basecamp in admin-mode to see if this solves the problem but the problem persist.
Can this bug be corrected in a new version of Basecamp?

I think it's clear that I reapeat the steps to the end of the original route.
When I create or recreate routes like this I use a little VIApoints as possible.

REQUEST:
More a small addition to the above.
When drawing and/or creating a route, there is alway a possibility that the VIApoint is not exactly in the middle of the road.
It doesn't give any problems, but it also happened to me that th VIA point was outside the road and I didn't saw that.

So in the past a guy in The Netherlands created a program called JaVaWaRTW tool: www.javawa.nl/rtwtool.html
It has the option to correct glitches and place them exactly in the middle of the road.
However, some time ago the creator had serious health issues and is no longer able to update the tool.
To keep the tool available he created a on-line version that does the same: www.javawa.nl/unglitcher.html
Upload you .gpx file and if necessary it will be corrected.

Is it for the programmers of Basecamp possible to incorporate this feature into Basecamp?
Would be nice if I click on the route with my right mouse button and the option (example) correct VIA-Glitches is there.

I don't know if I am at the right place here to report and ask this this.
If not, please let me know.

  • There is no more development of BaseCamp so it is what it is I'm afraid.

  • That is new information for me.

Will there be a new program or has Garmin stopped with these programs?

  • BaseCamp will continue to be available as is  MapSource, its predecessor

  • Thanks for the fast reply Sussamb.

Despite the small bug I wrote, the program runs fine under Windows 10 Pro x64.

Think it also works on the new Windows 11.

Let's all hope that Garmin wil start working on Basecamp at some point in the future.

Use it now in combination with my new Garmin Zumo XT.

Bought that one 2 days ago, and also bought a Touratech Mount Bracket (lockable).

Still have one question: Why did Garmin stopped the development on Basecamp?

    With regards,

    Nemesh

  • They just did. Why I have no idea.

  • I can think of several possible  reasons:

    1. On much smart phones Google Maps is installed.

And I must say it works very good.

However, you need a internet connection.

    2. The Coorona-crisis of the past few years.

I think that due to this crisis, sales of Garmin devices dropped.

In my country very much bike-riders use Garmin devices to map there routes.

At this moment even for people who walk or cycle the Garmin devices become more and more popular.

But, my country is a small country and Garmin will only look at their Glonal profit.

    And I can't blame them.

At the end of the month the numbers have to te black and not red, otherwise Garmin will go out of buisness.

Maybe it was due to cutbacks that much of the programming team got fired and that there are

only a few programmers working at Garmin to keep Basecamp running at several platforms.

Take also in account that maby in the future much programs have to be ported to 64-bits.

As the size of Basecamp is more then 60 MB, it will be a big taks to port the program to 64 bit and will be very exspensive I think.

Maybe wen the market for Garmin becomes better, the development will be started again.

I can't really imagine that Garmin will fully drop their support software for their GPS devices and leave that to other parties.

In addition to the bug and request above I have another request if Garmin would start up the support for Basecamp again.

    To sum it up:

    1. Remove the old routes if  merging them together doesn't work.

As I know now it does work with track.

    2. Selectable de-glitching.

Selectable because people who go off-road don't need that.

    3. Lock the toolbar.

Everyone that use Basecamp have a diffent layout for their toolbar.

Would be nice if it was lockable for my own layout.

Basecamp is a very good program that deserves futher development.

Let's all hope that Garmin will pick up the development in the future.

    @SUSSAMB, thanks for the reply's.
