Base Camp doesn't see GPS

Garmin express sees my Nuvi 2495 when I connect it to any of my computers, and it shows up in File Explorer [Win10 & Win11], but Base Camp cannot see the unit. Maps downloaded in Garmin Express show in Base Camp.

I have lots of space on the hard drives and I'm connecting the unit with a USB data cable.

Base Camp is Ver.474

How do I get Base camp to recognize my GPS?

Computers are 2 laptops and a PC, 1 laptop with Win11, i with Win10 Home and the PC is win10 Pro

  • Check Express isn't running. Does BaseCamp now see your GPS?

    If still not see support.garmin.com/.../

  • Makes no difference if Express is running or not,.  Still doesn't see any devices but I can see the Nuvi in File Explorer

I checked the link you mentioned and all those points have been met - Nuvi displays a connected icon, nothing else is running, I'm using a data cable etc,

Still no connection,  Very frustrating as it worked previously, now nothing.

  • Then contact Product Support for help

  • Unfortunately, they don't know either.  One of their first fixes was 'buy another Garmin'  Yeah, thanks.

Last message I have from them is "Once deactivating the Auto Launch [in Express] please try restarting the computer and opening Basecamp again. If that doesn't resolve we will need to create a case to look into this further."

Do you know if it's possible to transfer data, i.e. routes and waypoint files, to and from the computer to the GPS via File Explorer?

    Dave

  • Yes, export the data as a .gpx file then place that file in the GPX folder of your device.

Equally you can import current.gpx from the GPX folder to BaseCamp, having used Explorer to copy it to somewhere on your PC.

  • Thanks, I'll give that a try
    Dave

  • Well, here's what I found out.  Tried copying a gpx file into the nuvii, and get a message saying the unit is busy and I'll have to wait.  After a fairly long wait, the whole process stops and nothing is copied.

I tried copying from the unit, and got an error message saying that the operation could not be completed because the unit was busy doing something else.

I then tried doin a copy and paste inside the GPX folder of the current/gpx file and it worked, creating a file copy-current.gpx

This file was easily copied to my laptop and then imported into BaseCamp. YaY.  All the waypoints I had to create on the unit are now in BaseCamp.

Now if only I could send to the GPS.

The unit turns on automatically when plugged in, and that is why the unit is busy.  Is there a way to connect it as a passive storage device do you know?

I'll ttry setting the unit as an indoor device and see what happens.  Wish me luck

  • I found a solution on a Microsoft forum

Yes, it's a Nuvi problem. Apparently there are two mass storage formats and the Nuvi should connect automatically to the right one. But it doesn't. To get it to connect, you have to go to the Diagnostics page, which you are not even told exists

"To make sure the device is connected correctly:

Some of Garmin's newer devices are now Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices which do not automatically go into Mass Storage mode when connected to a computer.

Power the unit and go to the main screen.
    Press Volume.
Press and hold the top right corner of the screen for ten seconds.
    A Diagnostics page will appear.
Press Configuration Settings ( some devices may need to skip this step)
Scroll down and choose MTP Setting
    Select Mass Storage Single Session

The device will now go into mass storage mode when connected. After the initial connection, it will go back to MTP mode when connected again."

This is the only answer of any use I've ever received from Garmin Support about anything!

    ==============================

I have managed to export from BaseCamp directly to the GPX folder on the Nuvi, and the new data shows when i search on the GPS for transferred waypoint.

    Phew!

    Dave

Not the easy workaround I had hoped for but at lease I can get saved data from the PC to the GPS

  • This isn't quite correct. Modern Garmin GPS are set to mtp mode by default. This was to stop the issues caused when earlier devices were in mass storage mode. They won't 'automatically go into mass storage mode' and neither will any other device, eg phone or camera.

Whether the device is in mtp mode or mass storage mode doesn't change how it handles .gpx files

Glad you got yours working though.
