Caltopo to Basecamp to Drivesmart 86

I've created some maps in Caltopo of various areas in Colorado.  The maps show towns, trailheads and camping areas we will drive to.
I want to get this information/data into my Drivesmart.
Has anyone done this?

  • Not working.
I assigned categories (three in all) to about 20 points.   I used block select and it appeared to work perfectly when I randomly checked a half-dozen.
I plugged my unit into the PC and waited for it to show in BC.
I copy-pasted all 20 of the WP's into "internal storage".

When I verified several of the points in internal storage, none of them had anything written in the categories tab.  I unplugged the device and deleted the points in the device and tried again but got the same result.  Additionally, on both occasions when I unplugged the device and did: "Where-to-saved"  there were only 5 out of the twenty points that clearly showed when viewing Internal storage in Basecamp.  My experience with my hand-held hiking GPS is that WP's transfer very quickly.  Just to be sure I decided to leave the device plugged in longer in spite of the green check mark being displayed.

If it works this would make our navigating so much easier but I'm starting to have doubts.  The key seems to be that the info in the categories tab gets wiped when copying into the device's internal storage.

My final alternative would be to export gpx files out of the source program and drop them onto the Drivesmart's gpx folder in my PC's file explorer.  I will end up with a long list of mixed points (camping, towns, trailheads) from 9 regions in 3 states but that would be better than nothing.

  • Well if only 5 transferred that would explain why you're not seeing categories as they only show if you have 12 or more saved places or favourites. So the question is why aren't all your waypoints showing?

I suggest you try again. Having sent them to the device you should see a file named temp.gpx in the GPX folder of your device when you view it in Windows Explorer with a date/time stamp of when you sent them.  If it's there then disconnect your device and let it boot. Are your waypoints now showing?

  • I've repeated the operation a couple more times with the same results.

Note that when I copy the WP's into the Drivesmart (via Basecamp) and then verify the categories tab (in BC) all of their categories tabs are blank.  Somehow they are not transferring.
Also, I have 30 WP's transferred and they all show up in the device's Internal Storage (in BC) but when I unplug the device and go to saved places only 5 show up there.  Then when I delete them (in the unplugged device) and plug the device back into the PC and look in BC all of the WP's show up under Internal Storage in spite of being deleted via the device.

Could this have anything to do with the WP symbols being used?  Ie. blue flags?

  • Hmmm ... waypoints that cannot be deleted point to extra .gpx files in your GPX folder and this could also be causing your other issues. Delete everything in the GPX folder, disconnect your device then delete every waypoint using the menus on the device. Now when you connect your device it should be empty of waypoints. Is it? If so try to resend the waypoints with categories as I outlined above.

  • You nailed it while I was figuring it out!  (more like stumbling over it)

None of this was making sense so after giving it some thought I opened the device in File Explorer and there was a folder from a few days ago entitled San_Juan.  I had placed it there directly from Caltop and had not deleted it.  That folder had all the same WP's in it.  It was causing all the problems.  For some reason BC was not over-writing the older wp's, which had not been categorized with the more recent categorized wp's.
Now after deleting the folder and re-doing the transfer and opening "Saved" in the unplugged device the categories are there with the wp's inside.  Chalk it up to user error and experience.

Now that it's working the way it should my next step will be to go ahead and load a couple hundred wp's into the device using my naming system of categories.  Ie. State-Region-category.
