Base Camp with DriveSmart 86

Can I get a confirmation that Base Camp works with a DriveSmart 86 before I buy one?

Map Source would be better but it has been crashing a lot lately with the latest maps.

Thanks

  • MapSource won't work with devices in mtp mode, which modern Garmin devices are by default. This suggests BaseCamp works with the 86, no reason why it shouldn't

  • Basecamp is mentioned in the not so good review at www.poi-factory.com/.../52152

  • Well, It seems it doesn't.   As a test I created a route in Basecamp that is different from what Garmin would naturally pick.  I sent the route to the Drivesmart 86.  I go to look for the route and all I find under "Saved" is an entry that is the name of the final destination on the route.  I select that and it just guides me the way that it would if I have just entered the address of the final destination.  In the Zumo this was so simple.  Just pick Where to->Routes->Route name and it would follow the custom route.  At this point there is no point in creating a custom route as it will never be used.  I keep hoping that the route is just hidden somewhere that I have found yet.  I did check the data transfer parameters and saw an option to strip shaping points.  That option in unchecked. Leaving Saturday for a week of travel.  Fortunately I didn't really customize the routes on this trip since it is in the car and not the bike.

  • Routes are in the Trip Planner app not in Saved, that's only for waypoints. I suggest you read through the manual and not just expect it to behave like an older device.

  • Thank You!  I see the routes now under "Route Planner" Since I had already planned my route in Basecamp and didn't want to plan the route on the device I never would have looked there.  Unfortunately the week before a vacation is hell week at work and I just don't have a lot of time to work on this.  Well designed software should be intuitive and shouldn't involve a lot of studying just to use basic functionality.    In any case I thank you as I can now use the route I designed for tomorrow's trip.

  • Great. I'll close this thread.
