How do I measure grade between two points?

On a map for hiking in the back-country, I want to measure the grade/incline between two points.  The measurement tool has an option for how to display grade, but the grade is in fact never displayed when I measure between two points.  How do I find the grade between these points?

  • You can only do so if the map contains the relevant data. If grade isn't being displayed its likely your map doesn't

Google Earth is excellent for visualizing and comparing slopes to help pick a way through backcountry. I predominantly use GE to plan off trail hiking. Then open the KMZ in Basecamp for the transfer to my Fenix and GPSMAP.

If you have a track, then you need a source for elevation data. Once that is in the track, the grade is easy to get by opening the track and looking at the graph tab. The online service, GPS Visualizer, can insert the elevation as well as make other changes to a GPX to make it work better for hiking. Such as reducing the number of points.
