I am having a weird occurrence with some of my waypoints (or shaping points) that cause the route to reverse course for a short distance (about 67metres (or 200 feet).
Any ideas as to why?

Probably because they've been placed on the wrong side of a divided highway
I am placing them on a simple two-lane road. Of note, these are inserted shaping points so they were inserted after the original route was created. It seems to be related to the fact they were inserted and it can happen in multiple locations on different roads.
One thing I know is that when inserting a shaping point you must be very careful about which section of the route you click on before clicking the insert point. The part of the route that you select must be between the two points that you want the shaping point inserted between. Normally this wouldn't result in such a short reverse direction though. The only time I have seen what you describe is as SUSSAMB suggested, when the point is on the wrong side of a divided highway.
Agreed. I see that the "reverse" direction was actually going back to an intersection. My shaping point was fairly close to that intersection (thus the 200 feet). There was no shaping point at the intersection so I don't know why it was going to that location.. I can delete and reinsert in a different location with success. Don't know why this was happening.
It thought you needed to do a u-turn in order to hit the point so it is likely that the map thinks there is a lane divider there and the u-turn was no longer needed when the reinsert was in the correct lane.
