Basecamp - show or hide tracks option

Is there a way to SHOW or HIDE tracks in Basecamp "before" sending to the GPS unit (64ST).

Rather than having to click on "show on map" or "hide on map" on every track on the GPS unit itself?

I find it rather annoying when you upload to a GPS from Basecamp, and then have to select "show on map" to get a track to show on the GPS's map. If you forget to show on map of a crucial track, then you won't see it on the GPS's map. I'd like to be able to toggle this before uploading to the GPS from Basecamp.

Is it possible?

I'm new to Basecamp, and most often using Mapsource. So help me out!!!

Thanks,
John

  • John - No, there is no setting encoded into a GPX file for this.  That's the way your GPS unit works - you have to set each track to show or hide on the map with the device menus.  On my GPSMap 62S even tracks which are recorded on the unit as I walk around are set to "Hide On Map" when they are saved.  The track list on the device also does not show if each track is set to Hide or Show - you have to go into the options for each track one by one to check.  I'm guessing that all Garmin units work like that but I may be wrong.

  • Sadly... this was the answer I knew was coming.

I know how to show the current track, or hide it when 'tracking' the GPS's movement. However, I was hoping to avoid the ugly process to "show on map" when I upload a bunch of tracks for an upcoming Baja trip.

I color my tracks based on their purpose, and label them as such. Makes turning them 'on' to show on map easier, but the sheer quantity of those tracks is often a bit overwhelming.

On my 60 series (CSx) I never had to turn on the tracks to show on map. They automatically were shown. I wish this was the default for the 62/64 series. Seems it'd be easier to turn off a few tracks than turning on the majority.

  • Hmmmm.....

    For me it's:

    Basecampe > EDIT > OPTIONS

    In the DISPLAY menu;
(nothing relating to "tracks" other than line width.

    In the ACTIVITY PROFILE menu:
    > MAP DISPLAY FEATURES > under areas, lines, points.
(nothing to showing on map or similar)

Maybe your basecamp is updated or outdated? Either way, I don't see your solution.

  • Is this still the default "mode" for importing a GPX file and having to "show on map" for every track uploaded??

Garmin can't be so mean to not update the software, and allow us a tick box for this option. It takes awhile when I've got quite a few small tracks that are all labeled individually. It's something us track editors would love to have before importing the file!!

  • Yes the situation is still the same but the issue is with the GPS units not Basecamp.

Basecamp produces GPX files that will work on various devices and models, not just Garmin devices.

How the GPX files are displayed on the GPS device is down to how the firmware in that model of device has been programmed.  Different models operate in different ways, have different menu structures, etc.

As you said above, your 60CSx device showed tracks by default, so I guess there was a menu option to hide tracks.  Did you have to go into each track to hide/show on the 60CSx or did you never do that because you always wanted all the tracks to show?

Does anyone know how other models work, Etrex series etc.?

The Garmin programmers must have made a decision, maybe based on market research, to have tracks hidden by default on the 62/64 series.  I agree that it's an awkward procedure an open to mistakes.  It would be much better for me to have each track in the list highlighted or not so that I could see in the list view which ones were showing or hidden and be able to toggle hide or show in the list view without having to go into each track to do it.

And it's not just Garmin devices.  Everything these days has so many bells and whistles and they are all set to work in different ways - from how many times the microwave beeps at the end of it's cook time to the plethora of options on digital cameras.  Other than my hammer, screwdrivers, etc., which have just one straightforward function, I can't think of a single piece of equipment that operates exactly how I would like it to.

Sorry, but that's the way it is and we have to live with it.  Rant over. Rage
