My GPSMAP 60C will only communicate with the first app used after reboot. Then nothing. Then I have to reboot, and will communicate with only the next app I use (i.e. basecamp, mapinstall, express, mapsource). Is there a "USB release" utility

Hi after a monumental struggle, I installed my US TOPO maps from CDs, got Mapsource working, got Mapinstall working, got Garmin Express working, got basecamp working, but my GPSMAP60C will ONLY work with the first app I  use of that list.  If I try another app, it will not communicate with the GPSMAP60C. Then if I try that ORIGINAL app, it will also not work. If I close an app and reopen it, it will not work.  There are no ghost processes I can see in the Task Mangler in WIndoze 10.  If I reboot the PC it WILL work on ONLY the first app I use after reboot.  It's as if the USB permissions are being locked out or something once I close an app.

Here's all I've tried:

Connecting and disconnecting the USB form the device.

Trying a different cable.

Powering off and on the GPS unit.

Trying every permutation and combination of GPS communication mode inside the device.

Uninstalling and re-installing the USB driver.

Uninstalling and re-installing every program MANY TIMES.

Thanks in advance for your help, excluding all the info listed above, which I've already done many many times.

  • AFAIK your GPSMAP 60C was released in 2004 and was designed to work only with MapSource, so you can ignore the other apps. BaseCamp and Garmin Express only work with newer devices (not sure about MapInstall). So you need to stick with the MapSource app and getting it to do what you want. I assume you are using the Garmin USB Drivers software?

There is a discussion forum for your device on the GPSrChive site which may be able to help you, as this is not a BaseCamp issue: https://www.gpsrchive.com/GPSMAP/GPSMAP%2060/index.htm . It does have an answered question about getting maps onto the device.

  • Thanks.  It's a bit confusing, but rather than selecting squares of a map in the program (like in MapSource) you select "Install Maps" and it fires up Map Install. It may seem intutitive but that is not really shown anywhere.  And that works. So getting map into device so device is not just a brick has succeeded.  What STILL happens is that the USB port and hence device will often not be recoginized after using the app i.e. opening it and closing it a few x.  I have to completely reboot the PC to get it to work. THis is a fairly reliable work around but there's some issue with the USB permissions being released or something.  But both Basecamp -> Mapinstall or just using the Mapsource program (one step rather than two, better in my opinion) works, USB lockups notwithstanding.

  • I know this is the Windows forum but my 60csx works correctly with Basecamp and MapInstall on my Mac.  I have to have it plugged in and turned on before I load any of the programs but I can load and unload without a restart. Express sees the 60csx but tells me it is not compatible. This is apparently a Windows issue but Garmin support for Basecamp is nil or probably none.  I think they want you to use their new internet app but you would think they would realize the 60 series and other handhelds are used in the field without internet access and a computer based app like Basecamp is necessary.  Maybe they should leave the office sometime and see how their devices are really used.
