Garmin crashes each time I plug in USB to transfer routes.

Hi, I am trying to load routes on Basecamp to my Garmin Etrex 30x, when I plug in my USB to the laptop, a message appears; " saving all waypoints routes and trip log in GPX format 100% complete" Then nothing happens; so I try to switch it off and get a beeping sound, or a continuous beep.  sometimes it crashes and I have to take out the battery. What on earth is going on here? I'm far from impressed with this unit to be honest. Had nothing but problems from day one but I'm stuck with it so advice appreciated!

  • Try this:

In BC, in the Mallorca List, highlight the mallnmtt16east map

    Right click on it

    Then click Send To…

Scroll down to the bottom of the list until you reach the Devices and click on the User Data folder under your EOS_DIGITAL (G:) card. A green line should briefly appear while the file is being copied across.

Then repeat this for the second mallnmtt16west map and the two routes.

Put the card in your device, and power up.

Select Where To? > Routes and choose one of the routes. It should be displayed over the DWG map. This worked for me.

If not, tap Map Setup > Map Information, check that all Garmin Custom Maps (KMZ) loaded on the device are Enabled, then try and see the route again.

If still not, Disable all other maps except the base map and try again.

  • Okay - first image - Device [F:] folder structure.

None of your route/track gpx files should be in the [F:]\Gamin folder. Only .img map files like those from Freizeitkarte should be placed in this folder. This is why your device cannot read them

All these gpx files must be cut and pasted into the GPX folder in that structure (the clue is in the folder name), so that your device can find them. NB Leave the .Position.gpx file and any other files where they are!

If there is already a set of these gpx files in the [F:]\Gamin\GPX folder, delete all the duplicates, as you just want one of each file.

As your image cut off the bottom of your file listing, I cannot tell if you have anything else in there that you shouldn't have!

Second image - BaseCamp - with mSD card selected

This shows that you have four waypoints and six map files n the card in their correct locations i.e. they are readable. However you have duplicate copies of each of the two maps. This will certainly cause the device problems in reading them!

You must select and delete the four map files suffixed with a 1 or a 2. Do this by right clicking and select Delete as you want to remove the duplicates completely.

    Third image - looks okay!

  • Hi

Once again I must thank you for taking the time to help. I am working through these errors I made but am running out of time as my flight is silly o clock tomorrow morning to Mallorca. I fear it will have to wait until my return, for the moment I have the euro map on the device, cannot  for the life of me get the custom maps to show up, I enabled it but to no avail. I think I will get this sorted with the help of your replies but it will have to wait until I return in two weeks. I have a compass and a paper map though! The waypoints show up so I can navigate to them using a map, not perfect but it'll have to do for the moment.

I will keep you posted when I get back, thanks for all your help so far, invaluable.

  • Hi,

Just an update to the saga, I am back from Mallorca now. I got the walk mallorca map loaded and working which was just what I wanted so thanks for helping me do this, greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately back in the UK I cant seem to load the original base map now, it is visible as a map under the settings/maps section, but even if I disable the other maps and enable the europe map, all I get is a location arrow but no background map. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

  • Glad to hear that you were able to get the DWG Mallorca Custom Map working on your Etrex.

When you say you can't load the "base map", do you mean the Global Map or the TopoActive Europe 2021.20 map?

If your device is connected to your laptop, can you select and see the TopoActive map in BaseCamp? You may need to zoom right out to see it. Which countries is is covering?

Bear in mind that the TopoActive Europe 2021.20 map now comes as three separate maps: West, Central and East. The screen shots you provided earlier suggested that you only had the Central map loaded, which covers Denmark, Italy and the DACH countries etc. The UK is covered by the West map along with France, Spain and Portugal.

If you do have the TopoActive Europe 2021.20, West map installed and enabled but you still cant see the UK, then the map might be corrupted and it would be worth reinstalling it onto your Etrex using Garmin Express.

  • Okay noted. I’m away walking in the lakes or rather getting soaked in the Lakes, so I’ll look at all of this on my return at the weekend, thanks.

  • Hi

Yes its the TopoActive Europe map which doesn't seem to load.

I can see it in Basecamp but all of the countries seem just to show a white background with major roads and little else.

I dont know how to reinstall using Garmin Express, I opened the device which Garmin Express can see as my device, but there didnt seem to be an option to do this?

    Richie

  • I also get an error message on starting the device which says "too many custom map images, they will not all be displayed" No idea what that implies!

  • From your description, only the Global Map is being shown in BaseCamp, not the TopoActive map. Which of the TopoActive maps are listed in BaseCamp and are they in Internal Storage or on the mSD card?

When Garmin Express synchs with your device, it gives you the option to see the purchased Garmin maps linked to the device in Map Details. Clicking on Map Details lists the installed Garmin maps. Clicking on Map Options for an individual map gives you the option of reinstalling the map that is currently loaded on the device.
