BaseCamp questions

I downloaded and installed 4.7.4 on my w1o Desktop and the File menu has an option "Import...", which is greyed out.

I then loaded 4.7.4 onto my W10 Laptop and the file menu has an entry "Import into 'My Collection'...", whic is not greyed out.

The wording is different in the two cases.  Could someone please advise how I might be able to get the desktop to allow imports.

In my earlier post, which is now locked, I was informed that routes may only contain 30 route points.  My GPX file contained 30 route points, but BaseCamp exported that route with 2400 route oints I thought it was only 80, but closer examination shows 2400 points..  Could someone please explain why BaseCamp added all these extra  points and b) why it didn't give any sort of warning or error message when it exported more than the maximum number of points?

Finally, the route, when displayed on the BaseCamp map doesn;t follow roads.  It meanders all over the place, close to but not actually on the roads.  I'm confused

Thanks

Tony

  • In reverse order:

    A screenshot would help.

You won't get a warning about too many points as BaseCamp assumes you know what you're doing. If you have thousands of points are you really talking about a route or is it a track.

Import will be grayed out if you haven't selected a folder or list to import data into.

As you appear new to BaseCamp this may help

  • The gpx format was developed by a third party to allow people to share data from devices and applications made by different companies.  Consequently, it can't and won't show a warning about the number of route points as there is no uniform limitation.  Even within Garmin's own lineup, the maximum number of route points varies.

The 30 route point limitation refers to the number of points added by the user to create the route.  The other points you mentioned are probably the points that link one user point to another and follow the roads of a particular map.  Off the top of my head, I believe the user route points will begin with <rtept> and the points that connect the user points wiill begin with something like <rpt> or <gpxx:rpt>, at any rate, they will not be labeled the same.

The route not matching roads is difficult to answer without a screenshot.  What Map have you selected in BaseCamp? What map was used to make the route?  Is it really a route and not a track (many "routes" that are downloaded from different websites are actually tracks).

  • First, I must apologise.  I have dug deeper into the issue and the GPX file I submitted was corrupted.  This accounts for the mapping and route problem.  Sorry to have wasted your time on it.

I still have one unresolved issue.  I cannot find any option to select a folder to import data into on my Desktop.  I guess that the laptop had somehow auto-selected something for me.  I can't find anything in the help, so could you please let me know how to select the folder.

    Thanks

    Tony

  • Just tap on the relevant folder. Once it's selected you can import data.

Did you read through the tutorial I mentioned above? It really will help as you seem new to BaseCamp.

  • If you just installed BaseCamp, it could be a corrupted installation.  If so, I would uninstall BaseCamp, delete the install app you downloaded and do a fresh download of the install app.

As SUSSAMB wrote, just use the mouse to select any folder except "Unlisted Data" in the top left pane.  You could also try creating a new folder or list under the File > New menu.  However, if you can't select the "My Collection" folder then there was probably an issue with the install.

  • Yes, I did start to read it but once it got to the nitty-gritty of building routes without having explained how to select a folder I gave up.  I was confused by your use of the word "tap", given that I was using a desktop PC without a touch screen.

BTLAAKE's post below has now sen me on the right path.

  • Thank you for your very clear response.  It explains a lot.

When other software asks me to specify an import folder, it means to select a folder in my computer's file system that the software can use for storage.  I couldn't see in the options anywhere to specify it.  I now realise what is needed.

  • Sorry my term tap confused you, but glad you've got it sorted. I'd persevere with the tutorial if I were you. It should help you understand better how BaseCamp works.
