Confused on Map Logistics

(A bit inexperienced in this facet so please bear with me, would greatly appreciate input on following)

Created route in BaseCamp today and then hooked up new device to send the route. I noticed the Device has City Navigator North America NT 2019.1 Map.
So thinking I need same Map in Device as one I created the Route on, I click Maps in BaseCamp. It shows two maps with 2022.1 having a check by it
[  ] City Navigator North America NT 2019.1
[x] City Navigator North America NT 2022.2

which I surmise that means the 2022.2 is the one I used to create the Route (correct?).

So I should Click install Maps to the Device (correct?).

But wondering will BaseCamp install only the Map that's checked, or will it install any Map not already on the Device?

And will it leave the 2019.1 Map on the Device or delete it?

Do I need both maps to keep from breaking routes on device that were created with older 2019.1 Map?

Or should I delete or uninstall the old Map and re-calculate all older routes as old Map roads might be out dated?

And if so, then how does one delete a Map, I don't see any way to do that?

    Would help to know:

    Which device?

    Where did these Basecamp maps come from?

    You can't install a map from Basecamp to a device unless that device is legally allowed to use it. Equally if it is then sending a map to it from Basecamp isn't advised in many cases.

    Sorry bout that, it's a Garmin Drive 51LM. All my Maps (so far) have come the Garmin Site via Garmin Express installs or updates. But haven't done any of that on this new Drive 51LM.

    Also opening up Basecamp today I noticed in Basecamp (before plugging in 51LM Device) it's showing only the one [x] City Navigator North America NT 2022.2.
    Then when I plug in the Drive 51LM Basecamp then (under the Maps menu) shows both
    [  ] City Navigator North America NT 2019.1
    [x] City Navigator North America NT 2022.2
         and looking at the Device it shows only
    the City Navigator North America NT 2019.1.

    Apparently I only have the 2022.2 Map in Basecamp (Laptop) and the 2019.1 Map is in the 51LM Device.

    I assume all my Maps are legally allowed since all my Garmin Devices have LM designation on purchase.

    But a bit apprehensive clicking install to Device without input on all my questions since have no clue what ramifications to each scenario. Last time I did this was yrs ago on another Device.

    Also another question:
    Any advantage whether I install the Map from Basecamp or via Garmin Express?

    The simple solution here is to update the map on your 51. Use Express to do so, sending a map from BaseCamp isn't a good idea, it's aimed more at handheld and older devices. Modern 'on the road' devices receive much more than a simple map update from Express when you update the 'map' which you don't get if you do it from within BaseCamp.

    Thanks for reply, will do that when I get home.


    (1) Surmise if new Map breaks any old routes, the new map is more important and may have to recalculate the route(s) and possibly delete any problem shaping pts. Any comments?

    (2) If I ever run short of card space is there a reliable way to delete old Maps?

    Express will delete old maps automatically if they were installed using Express. Sometimes it is necessary for a device to recalculate routes after a map update but via and shaping points are retained.
