Basecamp--Recovering old Route files

I purchased a new Windows computer.  I download a new copy of Base Camp---Version 4.7.4.  I have done this before and somehow my old routes simply appeared in the Library  My Collection.  That did not happen in this case.  So I asked Garmin how to find my actual  historical route files.  They showed me how to get to my All Data files.  Garmin said I should be able to Import these files into Base Camp but when I try that I get an Error Message "Unsupported Version"  Garmin had no further suggestions other than for me to re-create my old routes.  Anyone have any idea how to recover/utilize these old files?

  • Unless you transfer the database from one PC to another you won't see your old database. Now though the issue is that it seems your database is too old for the current version of BaseCamp, what version was on your old computer?

You have two options that I can think of, others may have other ideas. First is recreate your old routes. As you don't say how many you have this may be the easiest way.

The second is to install your old version of BaseCamp on your PC, and import the old database. Then slowly update with later and later versions of BaseCamp until you get back to 4.7.4

Of course if you were happy with your older version of BaseCamp you could simply install it and continue using it.

  • +1 for these suggestions.

It maybe worth you visiting the GPSrChive website and reading the BaseCamp pages on Data Management to understand how and where BC stores your data: https://www.gpsrchive.com/BaseCamp/index.htm. You can also download all previous BC software versions from this site.

If you still have BaseCamp up and running on your old windows laptop then make a backup of BC first (File>Backup), then follow the detailed instructions on GPSrChive for moving your existing BaseCamp database to a new computer running the same BC version.

Alternatively, If you still have BaseCamp up and running on your old windows laptop, you could simply export each route as an individual GPX file to a folder on a USB stick, then recreate the folder structure on your new laptop running BC 4.7.4, then import the GPXs one by one from the stick into the appropriate list folder.

  • It might even be possible to export all routes as a gpx file and import that one file, hadn't initially thought of that.

  • If you do still  have your old set-up and have to download to gpx, I would suggest downloading the contents of one folder to single gpx and give it the folders name.  It might make rebuilding your folder structure a bit easier
