If I purchase the Garmin Overlander, will I be able to still use BaseCamp to upload/download my tracks & waypoints into Overlander GPS?

Guys...

Looking at buying the Garmin Overlander, but I still want to be able to upload from my BaseCamp Library of Tracks/Waypts some of my old tracks/waypoints into the Overlander GPS - Will this still be possible and IF NOT, how can I do it going forward considering I have a massive library of all my tracks/waypoints from all my past Trips and from what I have gathered off the web over the years....

  • You can import gpx files into Explore, which does support the Overlander. Whether BaseCamp itself does I don't know but you can export your files from there and import them into Explore.

  • I've had a quick look at the Explore and wasn't impressed with it. It does not have the same flexibility of BaseCamp in the way you want to view things (ie: viewing only tracks or waypoints or just certain folders, etc). Plus Basecamp gives u the ability to modify the tracklog before u list it publically.... not sure if u can do that with Explore.
There is a LIMIT to the number of waypoints that you can upload in any one file (500 I believe) plus u can only upload 1 file at a time. This is no good for me.

Here in Australia, I have a folder for each state within Australia and within that folder, I have a Tracklog file and a waypoint file. This has worked well for me over the years.

Currently, I have over 14,000 waypoints within Basecamp and 4270 tracklog files for ALL of Australia in Basecamp. I cannot see an easy way of moving them over into Explore. I'm not sure if u can EDIT a tracklog file within Explore either...

If u cannot connect the Overlander to Basecamp, then I will have to reconsider my thoughts of buying one as I NEED to be able to connect to Basecamp due to the size of my Library of tracklogs and waypoints

  • It might be worth reading this thread on the Expedition Portal to help make up your mind:  https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/garmin-overlander.205400/page-16

One post says that the Overlander is not supported by BC. Some non-Explore solutions to data transfer are suggested.

  • Hello! I recently purchased a Garmin Overlander GPS and have a couple of questions:
    1) Can I import GPX files/tracks to this device?
    2) How do I create routes on my MacBook Pro and transfer them to Garmin Overlander? Does he follow maps of Brazil, Chile and Argentina?

  • This is a 2 year old thread in the Windows BaseCamp forum, please repost in the Mac forum. Thanks
