Hardware failure and no backup - can still access Basecamp files though on new system

I had a motherboard failure and replaced it, but reinstalled Windows 10 on a new hdd and also Basecamp. I still have the original drive with Basecamp installed [same version as current], but it no longer boots on new hardware and I never took a backup (that I recall). I can see and access all the Basecamp files from my new install though. Is there any way at all that I can find and copy across all my walks and maps. There were many years worth on the old program?

  • The good news is that this should be possible by transferring the database files manually between drives.

I recommend that you visit the BaseCamp wiki on the GPSrChive website: https://www.gpsrchive.com/index.htm and scroll down to the Data Management section to develop an understanding of how BC stores your data.

Work through one of the three GPSrChive processes for "Moving BaseCamp Database" using File Explorer to locate and move the appropriate files manually. Obviously you will need to modify this slightly as you will be moving it between two drives rather than two computers.

Once the data is available to BC and stored on your new hdd, make the first of regular BC backups by clicking FileBackup !!!

This approach should also transfer any BirdsEye maps (JNX) and Garmin Custom maps (KMZ) in the folders, but not other Garmin maps (IMG).

This Garmin support page should help with transferring your maps: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=QiFbhYPah76hheXIrrbYM6

Let us know how you get on.

  • That info and the url links was all really very helpful.

Basecamp crashed and I was getting an error message, but a reinstall today seems to be working. But my Australia map doesn't seem to have come with the backup I found and restored. (I'll still be copying database for later stuff from original because last backup was 2019!. Disappointed

I will post an update when/if I get it all working. For me losing all those years of walks would be like losing all the family photos - and at my age that seems to matter. Slight smile
