Unable to connect my device (GPS 196) to Basecamp while Webupdater detect and confirm version

Hello, I could update to latest 4.60 software my Garmin GPSmap196 and basecamp detect the right version using the webupdater function but when I am trying to get data from my device I have the message no device connected to basecamp.

Also for info Garmin Express does not find my device.

I am using a USB to RS232 and RS232 to my GPS device. I limited to 9600 baud the communication as it is USB3 port, I also tested on another old computer having only USB2 port and get the same issue.

Thanks in advance.

  • While trying for hours to connect, I succeeded to connect my GPS using  'mapsource' to extract waypoint and route, May be it can give ideas why it is not working with basecamp as I would like to get it working with basecamp to support outdoor map update. +

  • The Garmin GPSMAP 196 is a discontinued Aviation GPS device which uses a serial data cable like the original eTrex units. My understanding is that it will only interface with a handful of the original Garmin software products, such as MapSource and WebUpdater which were developed to work with these early models and should continue to be used today to manage data, maps and firmware updates.

As far as I know BC was able to update the software on your device to 4.6.0 because it has Garmin WebUpdater incorporated into it, but cannot transfer maps - you need to use MapSource. Garmin Express will not work with serial devices either.

You had best contact Garmin Aviation Support to find out about updated or additional mapping that Garmin have available or maybe post an enquiry on one of the various aviation GPS forums, as this is a device issue not a BC issue..

  • thnaks you for th clear explanation that make sense. I will continue to do the regular update for aviation data base an use mapsource for the other update such as hiking.
