Create a usable route for GPSMAP 62s

I'm having problems with the GPSMAP 62s and Basecamp Route creation.

Both Basecamp & the 62s have the latest software updates installed. Maps are Topo Australia & New Zealand V4 and is selected as the map in Basecamp. Both Basecamp & the 62s Activity Profiles are set to Hiking.

Basecamp does not recognise tracks as shown on the Topo map, when creating a Route.

e.g. Waypoints (2 only) are at the end of a Track and end of a Road. Creating a Route in Basecamp, selecting "Create Route using Selected Waypoints", it creates a straight line between the 2 waypoints. (Very cross country). If I insert track points, it creates a direct line to the Route, without regard to road or track. Add a couple of track points it will recalculate to follow a road. It will not recognise tracks that are shown on the Topo map.

If I walk a track & record it, when I try to convert it to a Route in Basecamp and export it back to the 62s, it creates a straight line to a road for every point stored during the track (or off track) hike. (I can't screen shot that as it's only when I open the Route on the 62s, but it is as above only having lots & lots of those straight lines to a road)

I have managed to create 1 only Route that will follow both a track and road.

With the 1 exception, it seems Basecamp does not recognise tracks on the Topo map (although they are visible on screen) and when sent to the 62s they corrupt with multiple straight lines to a road.

Any suggestions on how to fix this are greatly appreciated.

  • I'm not experienced with those maps but many topo maps aren't routeable on trails, and the symptoms are as you describe. I use Direct profile with such maps rather than hiking profile, as hiking profile needs a map with routeable trails.

Looking at the Garmin specs for this it says nothing about the trails being routeable but it does say

    • Displays updated routable road content, by HERE, to give you turn-by-turn directions to your destination

so this indicates the trails themselves aren't routeable

  • Thank you for your comment. I realise that I have to VERY accurately in reading specs & read between the lines.

It appears I can only create a "Track", not a Route for bushwalking on a track so the Active Profile v's Hiking does not have any input to "New Track". Is this correct?

So, my understanding is that to create a walk that uses walking trails, I can only create a path using Track, not create a Route.

  • Tracks do not require an Activity Profile.  All Activity Profiles, except Direct, require  routable feature(s) of interest in the map data.  The Direct Profile does not.

You can convert a recorded track to a Route using the Direct Profile, but you will need to limit the number of points to 250 or less to use on your device.

You can create a Route using the Direct Profile and clicking on the map and/or adding Waypoints.

You can roughly trace a Track, using the Track tool, for a trail by holding down the left mouse key while moving the mouse.

On your device, you will need to  change the Routing to Direct.  You could also create a new Profile and set the Routing to Direct..  Both are done under Setup.  If you wish to delete a profile you have created, it can not be the active profile - this is also done under Setup.

Profiles on your device are preset the settings to typical user values.  Any setting can be changed to whatever you prefer and the changes will only be for that Profile.

  • Your information sorted my problem. Thank you.
