Issue with Map/Trail Visibility on ETREX 32X

I just updated my maps on my etrex 32x from the out of the box 2019 version to TopoActive America North 2021.10 today. When my device is connected to my computer I can see all of the roads, trails, and so on on Basecamp. However, my etrex does not show a SINGLE road or trail, and I have panned all around the US. I have also made sure that the maps are enabled and not disabled. I have also made sure to zoom in to check. All of the topographic detail appears however along with the Garmin based POI (shelters, bike parking, and so on).

How can I make the roads and trails appear?

  • Update: This is only in recreational mode. If I switch to automotive, geocaching, or other modes all the roads/trails appear. I bought this for hiking so obviously I'd want to use it in recreational mode. Any ideas as to why it only has an error in this mode?

  • The individual settings in each mode/profile can differ.  Have you checked the map detail level in the recreational mode? It should be under something like setup>map>advanced settings.

  • I've made all the settings identical and played around with them. I can zoom into 20ft and still don't see anything so I know it has nothing to do with detail, enabling the maps, or zooming in.

  • Might be the same problem but they don't seem to have a solution either

  • Need to call Product Support and make them aware of this then.

  • Has anybody solved this issue yet...or come up with a fix from the Garmin support team? This happened to my 32x unit exactly as previously described (8097016)...all roads + trails visible in every profile except REC. What's crazy is it's brand new...used it in the field twice and it had the roads and trails active. Yesterday they disappeared after literally turning it on (no changes). I was running original map software out of the box so not caused by any software upgrades. So I then did the 10h d/l current software map update online hoping this would override the issue installing the 2022.10v gear. Nope. Still a lame duck with no maps in ONLY REC profile. Not my first GPS...my 9th Garmin approaching 30yrs of regular use in many disciplines. All the settings are on-point and tweaked mimicking other profiles that do show roads + trails correctly (8097016). Any takers before the hard factory reset happens? Luckily this happened early-on and not many self gen waypoints or routes were stored and don't care if they get lost in a mysterious backup transfer hiccup. Regardless of age, expertise or familiarity...nobody is immune to the Garmin Gremlins when they come for you!

***KEEP READING...I HAVE A PLAN-B OPTION I'M USING I ACTUALLY PREFER BETTER THAN THE REC PROFILE MODE. CHECK IT OUT!

  • Just a heads up on a workaround solution if you get no relief on this issue (losing your roads and trails).

    1. Go to your secondary alt profile you prefer and make it active. (I used AUTOMOTIVE it has much more traditional topos and map coloring. Note to millennial techies at Garmin: stop messing up our ***! Traditions are meant to be preserved! Maps included! Newer isn't always better...and changing a name or color doesn't make it a brilliant new discovery. The REC profile was way too dark in shaded park areas especially drowning out the topos entirely and the access roads).
    2. Enter SETUP
    3. Enter PROFILES
    4. Create Profile (new one generated using same settings as your active profile. This will be saved so don't worry about it being deleted. All your WP's and RTE's auto populate across all profiles). Note: don't bother duplicating your corrupted REC profile...it won't add the missing streets and trails. Try it you might get lucky. I didn't.
    5. Go into this newly created profile, rename it, mimicking all the REC settings you prefer, screen formats and data fields. Save yourself the guesswork here and draw, write them all down in advance because toggling in and out of profiles is not only a massive waste of time but will add to your aggravation level for sure.
    6. Final steps...SETUP>ROUTING>GUIDANCE METHOD=OFF ROAD
    7. While in ROUTING>CALCULATE ROUTES FOR PEDESTRIAN. This is important to complete steps 6&7 otherwise you'll receive an error message stating "detailed maps do not support automotive or motorcycle driving."
    8. Like all auto gps units go dark in night mode after sunset for minimal cockpit glare...so i recommend you turn this setting off and keep it in day mode F/T. You can leave it on auto and you'll still have access to roads and trails but way too dark for my liking and you'll lose all your topo lines in the process. Here's the switch: SETUP>DISPLAY>COLORS>MODE>DAY. Then you're G2G to crank your brightness down to near nothing (use power button brief press and then toggle to dim).

As a traditional map reader...personally the AUTOMOTIVE mapping format looks much better and cleaner to me...If you come from the world of using plotters, old school waterproofing your own paper printouts and know what a lensatic compass is and how to use it...you'll understand and appreciate the visual difference immediately. FWIW: the AUTO mode IMO uses far better hues/tones...which allows you to lower your brightness setting drastically (in daytime) down to a mere +30% (even less at night)...which we all know will greatly help extend your battery life. I use mine on BATT SAVER & 30-SEC BACKLIGHT. This alone to me is worth booting the REC mode altogether and not ever using it again. I was using +75% brightness with REC profile (especially under low-light heavy canopies).

I haven't consulted with a Garmin REP yet to get the true skinny on all the redundant profiles (if their functionality differs). Since they all use the identical source maps...and you can tweak and adj every profile making them perform all the same if wanted. My $0.02 assumption is a mere visual graphics map difference between all the preloaded profiles (qty.5). There appears to be a max of 29x different "featured" items you can add/delete/change order. So far all I can delineate in obvious changes between the preloaded profiles are skinny and fat versions of the main page options and colors (which also can be modified in SETUP>DISPLAY).

This is a crazy long post and may seem more trouble than it's worth to a newbie...but not really that complex to the seasoned users in need of a workaround who were bummed out about losing their REC profile roads + trails. Personally I'm glad this happened to me (necessity is the mother of invention)...because I now prefer this more conventional looking map setup and have no intention of going back to the REC profile graphics. this might not be the case for those married to it after years of hand-eye memory imprinting. Either way...you have this as an alt option to fall back on in your toolkit should you want to take it for a whip.

  • If you eTrex connoisseurs have solid input on the known technical differences between the different profiles (besides the obvious preloaded visual graphics)...please let us know your thoughts. I've done my best (above posts) with only 4hrs of eTrex use under my belt to express and explain what I found to be clear-cut pros and cons of substituting any profile you wish to customize it heavily to your visual preferences and navigational needs (while maintaining the full roads, trails and topos). I do usually tend to modify the Garmin Land units a lot more than the Marine units historically.

And do support/tell us why you prefer and believe the REC profile to have superior functionality to the other profiles while doing land navigation operations. Thanks!

  • GARMIN TEAM SUPPORT - RESPONSE / FOLLOW-UP (06.06.2022)

Helpful and knowledgeable as always...and why I only use and recommend Garmin products for 30 years now. I contacted the in-house pros (Darrell on this call) and here's his synopsis/feedback:

    • Although not a common and seemingly rare issue...Garmin has now seen a few cases of this happening and will be monitoring the status of future occurances as they arise.
    • He confirmed the profiles are in fact merely "cosmetic in nature" regarding pre-loaded graphics and settings per profile.
    • There are no distinguishable gain or loss of "true functionality" between the pre-loaded profiles besides how they are setup at the factory for "probable use."
    • All profiles use the same base maps (so you're not gaining or losing anything in mapping data across the profiles).
    • Users can indeed setup all profiles to appear and act identical if wanted.
    • if you do feel the need to reacquire the corrupted profile (REC in these isolated cases)...a hard reset is at this point the only way to remedy and recover the missing street + trail data as installed from the factory.
    • The above "workaround" I am now using and prefer personally is an acceptable option to consider/pursue in order avoid a hard reset (which you'll lose all of your settings of course). Waypoints and routes as usual can be backed up/reloaded.

So, in the end, not a big deal unless you're bent on using the REC style visual map. I do get it ...nobody wants to spend $300 and have any loss of features. Just know it's not something that affects performance of the unit itself. It was a weird blessing in disguise for me actually...because now I have a better viewing map experience by accident! Just remember to follow those above workaround steps 1-8 if you wanna give it a go. This also enlightened me to the "SETUP>ROUTING>GUIDANCE METHOD=OFF ROAD & PEDESTRIAN" settings that were hiding I never saw before. This is important to look how they are pre-loaded regardless of your profile choice.

Don't knock it til you try it! Conflict is needed for real change...especially for us stubborn old mountain goats! Hope this helps or gives the Garmin faithful some answers that went unresolved for the past 10 months since this thread was originally created.

Have fun out there and keep on charging G-Nation!
