How do I delete GPX tracks that Basecamp keeps restoring to "internal storage" on my GPSmap 66SR

I've been using Basecamp for years. Recently switched from a 64ST to a 66SR. Nearly everything is working as expected.

But the 66SR constantly has old GPX files from trips I made on my bike months ago. They appear in the "internal storage" of the "device" within Basecamp.
I can delete the GPX files on the device, and they do not show up with Windows "File Explorer".

But the GPX files are still there.

As soon as I plug the USB cable into the 66SR and fire up Basecamp, the tracks/GPX files are back.

How do I delete them, really?
What is restoring them?
Is there some setting I am missing?

  • BaseCamp can only read what it sees so BaseCamp isn't 'restoring them'. They must still be on your GPS somewhere.  What exactly is BaseCamp seeing? Are they tracks or routes you created, if so were they created on your device or in BaseCamp and sent to your device?  Or are they track logs created by your device as you biked?

  • I think these may be FIT activity files that are being loaded into BaseCamp from your device as recorded GPX tracks. You probably have the device set up to record both FIT and GPX tracks when the recorded activity is saved. This can be changed for the future in Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format - change this to FIT only.  You only really need both if you want to be able to access a raw unmodified GPX file from the device itself. BC reads FIT files and shows the recorded activities as tracks.

When my GPSMAP66st Internal Storage is being read by BC, the ‘normal’ recorded tracks saved as GPX files have the date format YYYY-MM-DD and the second track from the FIT file as DD/MM/YYYY. This is the only way I can tell the difference in BC.

The existing FIT tracks may be deleted from the Recorded Activities screen on your device or from the \Garmin\Activities folder.

  • They are simply GPX files that are automatically created as I ride. I do "save" them on the 66SR, and upload them to Basecamp.

But I then delete them from "internal storage" and they keep reappearing.

  • I have noticed the redundant GPX tracks. I do have an ANT+ temp sensor (tempe) that I like to have its data included.

I'll try deleting the FIT tracks and see if that makes a difference

  • In that case, simply keep the FIT files by moving them from the \Garmin\Activities folder of your device to a folder on your computer, then you will be able to access the tempe data in future.

  • If that doesn't work try looking in

    - Recorded Activities
    - Saved Tracks
    - Saved Tracks / Archived Tracks
    - Saved Tracks / Archived Tracks / Auto

  • Thanks, I found the files that kept reappearing in this folder. \Garmin\Activities When I deleted the files my tracks stopped from reappearing
